    Permanent Magnet Alternator Mod

Sorry, the pictures were cleaned out with the rest of my google drive. Honestly, the conversion is pretty straight forward and I think you should have no problems without them. If you can, read some threads about a similar conversion for the xs650 and check out a schematic of a pma charging...

    Brake Light Blowing Fuses

Hi all, Recently while riding my my turn signals died out of the blue. I went home and found that the problem actually included the horn and the tail, indicator, and turn signal lights. I blew the fuse on that circuit. When I replaced the fuse I found that the problem occurs when the front or...

    Permanent Magnet Alternator Mod

Well while your ignition timing and valve clearance may be fine now, down the road it will be a major pain in the ass if you need to adjust them. I learned this first hand. I'm about to put the stock flywheel on to set everything straight, then reinstall the pma system, hopefully with some more...

    Permanent Magnet Alternator Mod

Glad to hear everything went well! I did the same thing when I first put the thing together. I'll probably add that to the guide if I can fit it. Is your new flywheel marked up?

Engine Running Loud and Popping/Stalling on Throttle

I looked like there was like a 120 degree section on the cam shaft for each cylinder where both cams are at their 'zero', where it is round and doesn't lift the valve. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks for the help.

Engine Running Loud and Popping/Stalling on Throttle

Nothing I haven't seen before, but I'll go at it again. I've been lodging the wrench holding the crankshaft into the footpeg/ground. I do have a non-stock flywheel with a measured TDC marking that is not 100% accurate, but from inspecting the camshaft I don't think it needs to be perfect TDC. I...

Engine Running Loud and Popping/Stalling on Throttle

The thing is I've set the valves like a dozen times now. Check, double check, reset, check once more. Is there something about this I'm missing, because it seems pretty straight forward. TDC on the compression stroke, make sure they are loose, set gap, secure, check gap using multiple feeler...

Engine Running Loud and Popping/Stalling on Throttle

I started my bike for the first time in quite a while, and the bike is very loud. The sound coming from the engine sounds like a loud clunking, not too different from the ticks the engine usually makes but quite loud. I did read that these bikes are loud when the valves are adjusted on the loose...

    Permanent Magnet Alternator Mod

blabla, The reason I cut the plug was because the other connections are for the old charging system and are no longer needed. If you want , you could slice open the writing harness and get rid of the wires all together, but I just taped them up and his them. Are you still working on this? Would...

Hard Starting and Bad Engine Noise

In my ignorance I did not realize that setting the valve lash is the same as setting the valve gap, I thought lash was at the cam. I did already set the gap multiple times, making sure the valve was in top position, but it is possible I messed that up. It is also possible that I might have set...

Hard Starting and Bad Engine Noise

Great, that makes sense to me. I'll look into how to set those and get back with my results.

Hard Starting and Bad Engine Noise

The top end was dripping wet when I took it off, so I don't think that's the issue. I forgot to add that I checked the valve clearances multiple times. Thanks for the help!

Hard Starting and Bad Engine Noise

My bike had been misfiring and generally riding quite rough, so I decided to try to dial in the ignition timing. After setting my ignition timing statically, which in my specific situation led to concerns about having slightly bent a valve from sticking stuff down the spark plug hole, I tried...

Finding TDC with spark plug stopper?

Started the thing today. Had to use stater fluid to get it going, and once it started I heard this pretty loud clunking noise. I guess I know that means... I'll check the timing again just to make sure it's not premature detonation, but it doesn't sound like it to me. Off with the head I guess...

Finding TDC with spark plug stopper?

Thanks for all the help guys. I checked the valve clearance and that did not change, so I guess I'm pretty safe, right? Engine isn't making any funny noises. If there is still doubt I'll try to get a hold of a compression gauge. I did find tdc and set the timing successfully with the stopper...

Finding TDC with spark plug stopper?

Nevermind, I could obviously just use the stopper when a valve doesn't come down.

Finding TDC with spark plug stopper?

Ah ok.... I guess at one time I knew that. Sorry for asking lame speculative questions, but I don't really want to pull the engine and check. Do you guys think its likely I bent the valve? I didn't use a whole lot of force turning the crankshaft and I didn't screw the stopper in much after...

Finding TDC with spark plug stopper?

I used the pencil trick when finding tdc to set the valves, but I want to have a more accurate mark for setting the timing. I wanted to measure the degrees where the piston hit the stopper on either side of tdc, then mark tdc in the middle. Drewpy, what do you mean by "let go"? You mean it...

Finding TDC with spark plug stopper?

I was trying to set my timing today. I don't have the stock flywheel on, so I was trying to find top dead center and measure the timing using a degree wheel. I went about doing this by making a stopper that screws in to the spark plug hole out of a plug and some hardware. Then I opened the...
