Hi, new here to the forum and motorcycles in general. I picked up a 79? XS400 for $50, and to haul off some junk. I think I scored... the engine has compression and the bike seems somewhat salvageable. Ive began stripping of some of the crap already...Thanks for all the help and shit.
I picked this up in a trade as an extra. I'm pretty sure it's a 400 frame and the motor is a 400.
Several questions:
1. Is the frame to chopped up to be safe? The pics I've seen there is a down bar off the spine. Is it ok to run this way?
2. The slots on the hard tail are 20mm. Do I need to...
I'm in the process of trying to upgrade the charging system on my xs400, and am trying to figure out how to mount the stator to the engine case. I saw in the thread on this forum about a member who did it who just slapped a metal plate between the casing and outer shell and sealed the gaps with...

Hey Guys,
New member here. I've just picked up a 78-79 XS400 Special that will be the base for my most ambitious build to date. I'm starting this thread to keep track of my progress as I get through the project. With any luck, I'll be able to finish sometime in 2015.
Anyway here are a few...
Hey Guys,
Brendan here. I have been lurking on the threads since I picked up my a 1978 xs400 from my neighbor. Everything is running pretty well and I am excited to learn from this community for some future projects.
Does anyone know the correct type of bulb to order for a 1978 XS400...
I'm a engineering student at Ohio State and proud xs400 owner for about a year now. I also own a stock cbr600f4i. I'm going for the stripped down cafe look and i'm hoping to get the bike on the road in the next few weeks. Let me know what you think!
(Seat and tank just mocked up for a...
Hi,
i was given an xs250/xs400 hybrid thing by my tattooist. It had been sat in his barn for roughly 10 years. was covered in cobwebs, dirt, dust and more dust. It looked mental. Had a massive ugly tank, a bizarre seat and really was not to my taste. However I saw that it was a hardtail and...
Just heading to the store but my bike is hours away and I couldn't measure, what would be the best length for Spark Plug Wire length when adding it between new Coils and Caps?
Thanks so much in Advance!

Wow, its been four years and I finally back on my Yamaha project. I would like to convert my 1978 XS400 to wire wheels from mags. A front wheel did not come with the bike I purchased.
Is it possible to transfer a disc or drum brake set up from another Yamaha? I believe Yamaguy55 said Buchanan...
I’m Andy Hull I started riding and modifying bikes when I was 15, started out with a old Tomos Silver Bullet moped. I went from two wheels into four wheels then decided that four wheels consumed to much space in my little shop/garage and I returned to the roots 2 years ago when I started picking...
I have built up 2 cb750s before but have never had much knowledge on Yamaha'ss. Its a 79 XS400 and we are Evening Gowns building it into a cafe racer for my cuz. I always find parts for the 650, now looking for a cafe tank. So I was wondering if the tank fitments are the same? If not where can I...
I don't have a ton of fabrication expertise but I am thinking about building a set of rearsets for my 1980 xs400 special. Anyone have any advise or models to go off of? Also does anyone make a set of rearsets specifically for them? I looked last year but couldn't find any.
Hi all. Thank you for the warm welcome to the world of motos over the past couple of weeks!
I was advised by drewpy to start a build thread to keep all up to speed on what I'm working on so that the jokes and sarcasm could be appropriately accurate throughout my first build. :laugh...
I recently purchased this bike from a guy i work with. I paid $300 for it, he put new tires on it, and it runs great. I've started to do a few little things to it so far, but nothing major yet. It needs a new paint job and a new seat for sure. But i think i got a pretty good deal.
New member, hows it going everyone?
Just finishing up the last few things on my 78.....changed my mind a few times on a few diff things but in the end im happy where the bike went. Fun bike, super light! Sounds pissed too. :bike:
Ok so i just bought this yamaha bobber xs400 ive had it for about 6 weeks and the only thing ive done to the motor since i bought it was change the spark plus, now right before i changed these spark plugs i would drive it and i felt like i could only hear it out of one muffler and would bogg...
Found another bike I may try and get but no way am I paying over blue book unless they have done some serious work to it and it doesn't look like this one has anything done. http://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/2353725324.html It looks a little wierd to me any opinions? They are trying to sell it...
So I've done a little digging and couldn't find much on the history of the XS400. I thought it would be nice to have a place for people to compile what they know about the XS400. Things like what years they were made, model designations, differences, VIN numbers for each year, colors...
