77 Xs Kick question

Does the Kick use the clutch to engage the crank? I think my clutch pads are gone or need to be roughed up but am unsure because it worked fine then suddenly stopped. I never have moved the bike under its own power yet so the clutch has never been truly tested yet.

If the clutch is not adjusted correctly usually at the case the kick start will not engage.
