    Hi

So my 78 xs400 will run fine for a little but then after about 15min it dies when I put the clutch in to change gears. My mechanic thinks it is electrical but he hasnt had a chance to play with it. The bike has does have a grounding issue. the brake light wouldnt work until we grounded it to the frame. Would the electrical system kill the bike while riding? Also where do I start when going through the electrics to find the problem?

What do the plugs look like?

  5. Their white ceramic on one end with a round metal tip and have threads on the other end with a flat wire sort of thing bent from the edge over the center....why? ;)

Yar, I still think you're running too rich at idle. The plugs will tell and it just takes a moment to look.

Hey I managed to drain all the gas and put new gas in and it ran great. I also replaced he spark plugs. Now when it runs for a while it will die when I'm riding. it will start to boggle out when I'm in gear and then eventually die. Im assuming this is carb related since I checked for air leaks and put new gas and plugs in. I also believe my bike is running rich because I burn through gas so easily. The previous owner said he has re jetted the carbs too. Is it possible something might be clogged in one of the jets? What should I do? If I was to pull out the carbs which seems pretty easy what should I do? if thats even the problem.

Others may disagree with me on this, but you should start a new thread or keep the other thread you have going instead of reviving a post from 7 years ago. Theres quite a bit of reading available on this forum too, but new posts are what keeps the forum alive regardless of how many times members will tell new members to clean their carbs..

I know nothing of your bike. Is it stock? What color are the new plugs you have? Did you go over all the maintenance? What size jets do you have? More info.

:laugh2: This may be the first time I've ever seen a person get called out for NOT starting a new thread. But he's got a point lol
