So the cover for the plunger Caps seem nigh impossible to get. Discontinued part.
There is ONE on ebay that would cost me over $30 by the time I received it. Ouch.

I still have one in functioning order. The other is off and too hard to put back on.

My question is, how imperative are these covers to the function of the choke?

I will try and boil the one to soften it and see if it will slide back on.

I'm assuming this is the part you're referring to? if so the same part is offered on XS650Direct.com since I see you're in Manitoba. If it's the actual brass cap, I don't see there on MikesXS or 650Direct
Yes that's the part I need.

But when you got to the xs650 direct site it lists that part # for the BS/38.
On the Mikes XS site, as the oneyou linked, it say it's for BS/34. Hmmm

I'll send them a message and find out what's up.

Thanks for the link.

The 80-84 xs650 caps are too large for 77-79 xs400 carbs. They would only work on 80-82 sohc xs400 carbs.

The thing is Mikes has it listed for 79-83 bs/34 ...
Choke Plunger Dust Seal - Fits: 1979 - 1983 Yamaha XS650 BS34 CV Carb Choke Plunger.

Did those years on the 650 use the same carbs as the 400?

Even if they did, don't you have a '78?
Check out the parts compatibility:

Yes I have a 78.
Didn't anticipate all these little parts would add up. The shipping from the US to Canada is outrageous on these tiny little parts.

I have budgeted myself between $2000 and $2500 to rebuild the bike and I haven't even replaced the expensive parts yet!

Thanks for your help so far tho.
