After weeks of frigging around with a single cylinder start problem, I finally figured it out. For some reason, I did not realize that the starter circuit actually draws fuel through a hole in the float bowl, where the little tube goes down. I knew what the tube was for, but didn't realize there was a passage in the float bowl for it. DUH! Of course, the one on the right side was plugged solid, and even the one on the left was partially plugged. It now starts better than ever at position 3, sits at high idle in position 2, then drops to low idle in position one!
So, clean your float bowl too!
