Hello all,
Glad to join you. You all seem very interesting and knowledgeable. I just picked up a with badging on the side that says special 400. The numbers stamped into the neck are 4R4-000135. Can't really tell what year it is. The sticker doesn't seem to have it on there clearly to me. It does say manufactured by yamaha motor co, 7/80.
Is it actually an 80'? I didn't think they had the "special" badges until 82'. Whats your thoughts? Definitely not the model year the guy i got it from thought it was.

Yes it's a 81 SH the "specials" started in 80. Post some pics. Your bike is a low production number which they started with 123.

So based on your guys opinion being low production numbers..would it be a bad idea to chop on this bike? Id kinda like to turn it into a scrambler. It turns over, it had oil in it, and it looks like overall its in good shape except for the "patina", needs a lot of rubber bushings replaced, obviously carbs cleaned and it needs keys. Gonna take some work either way, but figured I wouldn't make everything perfect as a scrambler. Whats your thoughts? Im new to the honda scene; been solely a honda guy before now.
