My friend managed to sheer off the bolt on the end of his cam by over-tightening it.

We're currently working on drilling the bolt out, but in the mean time we are wondering what this bolt actually does. It doesn't seem to hold anything on.

The advancer looks like it is held in place by the points. The points are held in place by screws. Of course, then you have this bolt and washer on the end of the cam that doesn't look like it holds anything on.

What am I missing?

You need to have the bolt on there it does hold the governor in place:)

I hate to say it but gorillas should use short wrenches. Speaking from previous experience I have broken or stripped many bolts nuts or castings. Dont get me going on spark plugs. The bolt in question holds the spark advance unit to the cam shaft. I think it's keyed to the cam and the bolt & washer hold it tight with no slop to keep your timeing from wandering around. That would be bad.
