Gas tank replacement

Fellas, I'm converting my 81 special II xs400 into a brat style bike. For now everything is going well except for the original (tear drop) gas tank, it is throwing me off. I purchase a DT 175 gas tank from eBay but the center of the tank is too narrow so my coils are on the way. Does anyone knows or has tried other gas tanks with these bikes and if so from what bikes and model do they work. I have been looking at the Suzuki gs and cb 550 gas tanks but not sure if they would fit.

    Thanks

The XS came with a 'boxy' style tank that is probably what you are looking for. They are almost a direct fit, just need to modify the rear mount.

Unfortunately they are sought after, and the price is quite insane for them.

I don't think any other tank out there is a direct fit without extensive modifications.

I'm not familiar with the different tanks. What tank you do you (photo) and what do you want (photo)?

If you have the skills, you could chop and relocate the coil mounts. I did just that when I mounted an XS500 tank.

That's, a good idea. Can you share some pics of your coil relocation project.

What are those on the frame left center of my photo?

I haven't got any up close photos yet but here in my build thread you can see I mounted them on the frame rails just behind the head. They fit neatly inside and are concealed by the tank all the stock wiring and leads are unaffected also.

Hope it helps. The only thing that is made slightly more difficult is access to the screws atop the carbs.

    Touché!

Apparently it's a good spot, didn't even notice! Do they clear the carb h-pipe in that position? I was thinking about moving mine.

Can't say as I received the bike this way. I'll see if I can stuff the OEM air boxes and pipes in there.
