    Well hello everyone!

How great to find such a devoted forum and community for the old xs. I recently purchased a 1979 xs400 from a man in Calgary Alberta, he was the original owner and it only had 8000kms on it.

I bought this bike for my girlfriend, with the plan of doing a tracker (ish) build, making something she can use to commute, explore, and generally look good on ;)

So, in all the bike is running fairly well, it has a starting issue. Seems to keep draining the battery when trying to start it with the electric starter. When its charged over night it fires right up, but after a few days of using it gets harder and harder to start until the bats dead again. Was in storage for about a year before i bought it. So! Work to do! As of right now I've just started taking off components that will be either replaced or just not used, and the first real order of business is going to be checking ignition/carbs/charging systems.

Any help will be massively appreciated as i have zero experience with these bikes! But i love to learn so I'm looking forward to this winter's build quite thoroughly.

As a side note, my girl is away on a 6month trip right now, the bike hadn't been touched when she left, so the plan is to have it done (ish...at least presentable haha) by the time she comes back in the spring!

Here are a couple pictures of the bike as is:

Good find. Looks clean. Looking forward to the build thread.
  4. Welcome.

I hope she loves it when it's all finished up. I documented my XS build here for my wife's bike as well.

Plenty of people here to help with any problems. Best of luck.
