Help with kick start install

I just put my XS360 engine back in the frame after a top end rebuild. The engine turns over just fine with a socket wrench but the kick starter sticks and won't turn the crank.

I've read the manual a couple of times but it's not making a lot of sense to me and the photo is useless. Any pointers, photos, or other sources that might help a minimally-talented schlub make it work again? It's a 2-D model so the kick start is all I've got.

Page 37 and bottom 4 pics, and 45 and last pic, and page 46 shows the exploded view of kickstart. All in the engine and gearbox section of the manual here onsite. You must wind up the spring or nothing on it works. Page 45 pic.
