I'm in the process of rebuilding my peacock as described in out wonderful how too. I have found however that I have no in tank filter nor hosing, just a pectcock with its oval ring. The manuals description is quite vague and no exploded view of it.

Internet pictures seem to be just a hose and simple tower with a fine screen? Any one make one of their own for replacement?

If you do have it use it. They help keep stuff in the bottom of the tank from getting into your petcock also larger partials plugging an in-line filter.

An in-line filter you can actually monitor is a good idea with or without a 35 year old thing in the tank, however, take note that without the plastic 2-staged tower filter, I don't think you will have a reserve of fuel to get you another 30 miles if you run out of gas. It will let you keep on running until it's all empty.

Either use your trip odometer religiously to ensure you re-fuel in time, or carry a bit of gas in another container.
An empty SeaFoam can works - but only holds half a US quart (maybe 6 miles).
