just picked up my first little yam 400 and found this site, looks like it will be usefull.
its an '81 special for 450 $ (cad) and i dont know much about these bikes, my last project was a kawi 650 cafe, this time im going simplistic chopper.. excited to get going once i get some time.

im not sure if its running but its complete + a pale of parts and a 2nd engine
its the middle of winter here in alberta so im going to take my time on this one.

my haynes manual is in the mail... couldnt find an original yet

so far so good!

i havent looked at the bike for more than 5 minutes and ive been up north at a camp for the last couple weeks.. i was just wondering do these bikes come in sohc and dohc?
im not even sure what im working with, its a 81 special 400??

thanks volcom for the link

Yes, they do come in a SOHC and a DOHC. Your 1981 XS400 Special could be either. Like Volcom mentioned, you should be able to locate your manual here, and then download it. I did the same for my bike and even put it in a custom cover.

I'm an avid Kawasaki fan....any pics of your 650?

Welcome bro!

my hard drive with all the build write up and photos crashed a few weeks beforethe bike was completed and lost the entire build write up
this is all i have hah... damn
