  11. So I started wiring the bike today and decided to scrap the old harness and build my own from scratch so I got the regulator mounted and recifier mounted up and started running wires and a buddy of mine says I'm going to have to run a resistor between the battery and ground cause the original harness and wires and lights acted like a resistor, so any one have some insure on this

The lights and harness do act as resistors, that is true. I do not believe any of that resistance is necessary for everything to work, however. It serves a purpose; wires add resistance, but you need them obviously. Lights add resistance but we use the light, etc.

Drewpy has a howto for making a custom harness from scratch. I don't think he threw in any extra resistors or anything.

This advice you might have heard before, but take a picture of the old wiring harness before you throw it away..Take some pics of when you are redoing it....Some random pics of the wiring...It helps...Bill

or just don't throw it out until your replacement works perfectly ;)

    bike sounds awesome btw!

  15. well the harness i had originally was hagered as fuck, po did his own custom shit in the harness :cussing:.

so i found this harness diagram for the xs650 which uses the same reg and rec setup and same amount of wires coming out the stator, so i am wiring the engine up today and then im going to wire lights turn signals and such once iget the engine to run and charge at the same time

Where in the wiring was your friend suggesting this resistor be installed? On the ground from the battery negative to the frame/engine??? If so, I'd suggest he put his pipe away for a while...

While that wiring harness is for the XS650, it is basically correct for the XS400. Keep in mind that we have 2 ignition coils. The horn/accessory connection could also be used for turn signal, gauge, neutral and oil pressure lights

  17. yea i already had the coils wired up to the point where i could connect them to a battery and fire it up, but i am mainly using the charging system part off that harness diagram :D

  18. so today i found out why my system isnt charging, my rectifier was fried , so i looked around locally for one and couldnt find one at all so i made my own. :D

Yep. It's just a bunch of friggin' diodes. No reason to spend like $100 on a used one.

  20. yea lol an only 2 parts inside it with 5 wires on it i used radio shack 276-1185, and wired them up like this was pretty easy and thanks to who ever made this diagram, i do not take credit for the pin out
