Hi there,

I have been building bikes in my garage for over 4 years now including a KZ400 (x2), XS850 (x2), CX500, XS1100, and some random work on a handful of other vintage and modern bikes. I am getting ready to get started on a 1979 XS400 for a local guy here so I figured I'd join the group to get some input from the XS400 club.

Previous owner stated that the engine needed a rebuild due to poor compression test numbers. So I'm going to start by checking the compression performing a leak down test and go from there. My plan at this point, without have looked into it too much is to replace the rings and all engine gaskets. I doubt a complete bottom end rebuild is necessary, but I guess I don't know that till I dig in.

Then I clean it up, new fluids etc. and do some cafe racer treatment updates to it.

Any tips, tricks, helpful hints specific to this bike appreciated.
