Other brake calipers that fit stock forks mounts?

Have any of you guys found another caliper which will bolt up to the stock mounts on a 81 model? I'm having to get a new master cylinder so I figure I might as well juice up the stopping while i'm there.

i know a few others have made up adaptor plates to mount other calipers but that normally goes with a bigger disc conversion as well

I don't really think the bike needs twin discs up front. I upgraded to twin discs with the swap on my bonnie.. but there is a significant weight difference in the two bikes. I was hoping somewhere along the way someone had found a caliper with similar mount hole spacing! I may try to make something work with one of the nissin units I have here.

single disk fz400 etc with R1 caliper is pretty good at stopping the bike and weigh a lot less!

Will the 400 rotor bolt up to the xs wheel??

yep, do a search on here as its been discussed with a list of compatible rotors. CADxs has a ducati one and he recons it doesn't need spacer!

Awesome. Thanks! Will the new rotor work with the stock caliper until I find a solution or does the size difference mean a relocation plate for the caliper is needed?

You cannot use the original caliper with a 320mm disc. The original disc was 267mm? maybe so if you go to a 320mm disc you will need to make a bracket to space out a new caliper. Newer discs are also half the thickness of the OEM Yammie ones.

There is no straight swap of caliper or disc unless with another XS/SR model of Yamaha bike, in which case why bother. There are lots of modern caliper and disc combo's that can be made to fit but all of them need some work to make it happen. The original front disc worked really well when in good condition and I think most changes to the front brake are cosmetic/style issues not really a pressing need for superbike braking performance. It's only braking a bike pushed by a 30 year old 400cc engine after all.

That said, if you want to change the brake go for it and we will help where possible

Will a 1997 CBR900RR Rotor bolt up to the Yamaha wheel? From what I can find the rotor diameter is 296mm. I did find another thread on the xs650 forum that stated some Honda and Yamaha rotors are 6 bolt 80mm on center and interchangeable: http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16341

I already have a CBR900RR Nissin 4-piston caliper and master cylinder set-up so the Honda rotor would be ideal. This may be a stupid question but could I use the Nissin set-up on the stock rotor?

I didn't want to start a new thread as this one seems the appropriate place for this question.
