Now that you mention it I took another look at those pictures. Does seem strange with spoked wheels and a disk brake on the front. I have a 1978 with spoked wheels, it is drums front and rear and a 1977 with cast wheels that one has disks front and rear. I am no expert and I know some bikes were made with a combination of drum and disks but don't recall that as a combination on the XS400's.

The xs400 never came with that setup. The model he has is a 78 2-E which had a front drum brake. The setup on that bike is off some other bike altogether.

Front brake cables can be had on ebay. Use the part number to find it.

That is a simple problem to correct.

Give them a call and explain what you are trying to do. They will most likely tell you to order a universal clutch cable kit. I did just that for my 1978 XS400 and it took all of maybe a half hour to figure out how long to make it and solder the end on the new cable. It would have been even easier if I had the original cable to use as a pattern for the new one.
