so before my bike (77 XS360) was running pretty good except for a mean bog in mid range rpm's. so I pulled my carbs to do a more thorough cleaning. popped them back on and I can't for the life of me get the bike to stay running. the only thing I adjusted was idle. it will run for 3 or 4 seconds at a time. so I pulled the point's cover to check gap and I can't get the correct gap. it won't open more than the thickness of a sheet of paper no matter how much I twist the points plate, these are brand new points. could the cam that makes the gapping be worn down? or should I just try PAMCO electric ignition :)

You don't rotate the plate to set points. That is for timing. The smaller screws are for that. This video is for a honda but the setup is almost the same. The guy is an old biker dude but this will help. All of this is also in the manual so download it and read up for all the correct settings.
