Possible Clutch/Transmission issue

So this is my first bike. So I have no mechanical experience.

I have an 81 xs400. It all started going down the freeway and I noticed I couldn't get up to speed like normal. So I took the next exit and I could down shift and shift back up fine. Then all of a sudden started making a weird knocking noise and none of my gears seemed to engage and I lost all power, but the engine was still on every gear acted like neutral. Any help would be much appreciated, I cant tell if my transmission blew or maybe the clutch isn't catching any of the gears. Surfed the site a bit but couldn't find my exact problem. Has anyone else had this problem?

So I will be that guy answering his own questions. I dug into the department where the sprocket goes and noticed a washer and bolt just sitting on the bottom of the cover. Turns out it was the bolt for the small sprocket. Put it back on and it wasn't damaged or anything! Luckily I pulled off the freeway going slow when it popped off. I don't know why or how it happened, but I'm glad it was an easy fix.

Make sure to torque it to 40-45 lbs.
