Rear shock disassembly?

You need to compress the spring and unscrew the top.

You forgot to mention about driving the tiny roll pin out first. Mine were corroded over so I didn't see them at first. I cleaned mine up with a wire wheel and then I painted the springs. Assembling them with out scratching them should be interesting!
 
Chris don't need no stinking rolled pins.

The shocks may have changed over time though or they could have been OEM replicas.
 
Maybe. I have had three sets apart from a 78,79 and 80 models. None had them.
 
Maybe thekrnel's are aftermarket. Let me check something right quick...

Nope, no parts diagrams show an exploded shock, but even looking at the xs650 most just need to be compressed to facilitate removal.
 
There's really small roll pin in the upper cap about an inch down from the mounting hole. It goes through the upper cap and through the shock rod.
