rear turn signal mounting

After being gone for awhile finally getting back to my xs400e 78 model restore project. The issue is with my sagging Rear turn signal. Replacement Rubber Damper not be be found any where. The ones on Mikes xs are square in the middle and the 78 fittings are not quite like them. Question is ,do the signals have to be rubber mounted? Would a metal washer work on the outside like what's on the inside for ground. ANY ideas?
 
I used two larger washers on my 78. 1 on the inside and one on the outside. I left the rubber on the bike so that it dampened the vibrations a little. I used "fender" washers from Home Depot. Large diameter washers with small holes. This allowed me to use the turn signal to hold them together. All I did was put the stem of the signal through both washers and tightened the nut ok the inside. Just like that fixed my sagging lights.
