so i am wondering what this tube is.

it is on the upper right of the engine, just to the inside of the valve adjustment cap.

1980 xs400 g or sg, i think

looks to be made of copper or brass. the end looks like it should be open, but the PO filled it with some sort of rubber caulking (possible to keep it from leaking?)

so i dont want to take out the rubber filling until i know what it is.

in the manual, it looks like it might be for the "gear pinion," but i cannot find any info on what this does. if this is also what this tube is for, then it looks liek i am missing the gear pinion itself.

any ideas?

thanks!

That's the end of your tach cable. It looks like the cable has been cut off and filled with caulking of some sort.

Look in your manual and it should describe how to remove it. Should be one screw, the one just above it. There might be a trick to it. Also do some searches on here. I figured it out on my bike last winter.

yep, that's what it is! thanks!

now that I know what it's called, i was able to find some posts on it. found one from a few years ago where a member on here machined custom plugs. just messaged him to see if he is still making them.
