My second post and already making questions. :)

There are dozen of topics about tank swaps between different xs400 models. Although almost every topic deals how to swap teardrop tank to bulkier one. How about the other way round?

Our bike is probably from 1981 (xs400 2A2) and has an original boxy fuel tank. The vision is to create tracker or scrambler so teardrop-like tank is needed. Project has not started properly yet but short introduction can be found here:

Original XS400 teardrop tank does not look bad at all and could be the easiest option/solution. Will the teardrop tank fit without (or with small) modification in place of orginal boxy-like tank? How about differences between XS´s teardrop tanks (size and looks?) Is there any?

Could somebody identify tank used in this sweet bike (XS400 by Herencia Custom Carage). For me it looks like original (quite) xs400 tank. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

That looks like an original xs400 tank, had the same on my xs400SE. I've still got it lying around if you're interested and postage is reasonably (definitely need new paint btw)

The issue with the tanks are the rear mounting bolts don't line up the same. The tear drop is a longer tank than the box ones.

I can only tell for Euro-models.

I think the teardrop tank will fit on your 1981 XS (the one from your first post). At least in Europe the teardrop tank (from XS400 SE) will fit on the later XS400-models with 16 liter tank. And the one on you photo from your first post is one of those 16 liter tank XS.

The early models with 11 liter tank (1977/78) are shorter and the SE tank will only fit with a little adapter.

Oops, you are from Europe. Saw that too late...

I've got the teardrop tank, mine is a '81 4g5 model..wouldn't mind swapping it with the other tank..if interested.. I'm in the UK
Cheers!
