Glad to be here and the XS that was meant to be...

Yes; I used a new ring so I’ve gotta figure out what’s going on.

Glad to be here and the XS that was meant to be...

Checking in... success with the carbs:) Thanks to a few members here... especially @tstidham for some good ideas as I sorted this issue. My idle mix screws were not properly adjusted; the bike was idling off of the main jet and never touching the idle circuit. At least the carbs got yet another...

81 XS400H – putting the Trusty back into Rusty

Awesome. It's a good thing you had them; I can't find the record of where I found mine. It was a set of four from a random shop. Yes... the washers I found were 1mm, so I tasked my daughter with sanding them down, like you'd do with valve shims. Nylon would have been much easier!

81 XS400H – putting the Trusty back into Rusty

I was wondering the same thing @Buddha . The only way I know that is I just did the same thing. @CaptChrome I found a good place for the shaft seals if you need them; can't find the info atm but I can dig it up.

Tire size for my first bike

@Verynormal good choice on spending money on new rubber.

    What am I missing?

Yes; I completely disassembled the carb BUT did not clean the idle mix screws as they were still under the brass plugs. I'll give it another cleaning while it's out. I did clean the jets separately but I'm no professional. Operator error is definitely a possibility.

    What am I missing?

@tstidham Ok this makes sense and I've learned something as well from your description. I just (literally) pulled the carbs to inspect so when they're back in... I'll do the above. Thank you.

    Trouble finding parts

You can always make your own cable as well. I always start with Babbit's or Adept and find the part number... go from there. Sometime's get it from them, other times eBay etc etc.

    What am I missing?

@flea Again I appreciate the thoughts. This bike is something we've been building for a bit; if interested you can see it here. It has always idled well, and pulls well also. Upon initial start and test-ride, I had a hanging throttle and a few oil drips. All cables are new; throttle cable is...

    What am I missing?

Did some more checking etc. I turned the idle screws all the way in (fully seated) and the bike starts first kick and idles fine. So that doesn't seem right :banghead: It does rev higher when I open the idle screws back up... but I'm still getting the hanging throttle. Time to take the carb out...

    What am I missing?

@BambinoFan yes! They snap back with a vengeance. All of the springs, spacers, etc were cleaned and look/function as new... at least I think.

    What am I missing?

Yes. They are brand new but yes; still checked them. I made sure they went on well; didn't want to have to replace the rubber again. Index point is correct and the diaphragms drop down as they should when manually raised.

    What am I missing?

I figured I put this question in it's own thread... 1981 XS400 H. Carbs synced after engine warm-up. New air filters. Carb cleaned, new butterfly shaft seals and washers, new diaphragms. Floats at 26mm. All stock jetting and exhaust. My mixture screws are now at only one turn out. Bike starts...

Glad to be here and the XS that was meant to be...

Progress report: Even after a carb overhaul (new diaphragms, shaft seals and washers, a thorough cleaning etc) I was still getting the hanging idle. Ugh. The throttle cable is new, lubed and with no kinks. It snaps back with authority, at all handlebar positions. Carb is synced. Float levels...

Glad to be here and the XS that was meant to be...

No leaks under the bike, which is a good sign. Running it for a while will be the real test. Carbs have been re-assembled and are back on the bike, along with the NEW air filters. We rebuilt the petcock but it still drips fuel; I've fiddled with it a lot and it seems the piston isn't fully...
