    dead spot in throttle

Set the floats, cleaned the carbs. Fired right up. No dead spots. Took it for a ride, no more hesitation. I pulled the plugs. Right side plug, has a bit of white on half the plug. Other half looks normal. Left side plug has black dry soot on the plug. Anyone good at diagnosing plugs?

    dead spot in throttle

Puled the carbs. may be dirty. found the tiny holes in the jets under the fuel bowl to be filled with a green substance. Looked like corrosion from copper. But now the floats are not working. I'm have to take the carbs off and set the float height.

    dead spot in throttle

There seems to be a dead spot in the throttle at low rpm. Mainly when taking off or doing less then 5mph and you give some gas. Not like it's coughing, but as if you were to kill the bike then hit the throttle. If I recall right, it's about 1500 2000 rpm when this happens. It's a pain...

New owner with no idea where my bike problems are stemming from

Your choke is working. With you pushing the choke "button" in, that turns the choke off. Pulling it out will turn choke on. I also agree with the clutch cable adjustment. That will probably fix your shifting problem. Unless the cable is bad. When you pull the clutch lever, does it pull smooth...

    Is it True?

After rebuilding my carbs I bench synced, gets drove. Then used a manometer. According to the meter they were still off. But I did notice a difference. You can build one for about 5- 10 dollars.

    Is my bike really a 1980 XS400S?

Interesting... I have an 81 special... But brass floats and open idle air screws... Must have been changed at some point in its life.

    Louder after valve adjustment?

Finally got the valve adjusted correctly. I checked again and this time the bike rune real nice. Good acceleration at high and low speed. On a test got this thing up to 75. Still have a small hesitation at very slow or stop when starting. Seems like a dead spot in the throttle.

    Louder after valve adjustment?

Well after valve adjustment the low end is really boggy and hesitation. Higher speed I can crank it down and it goes fine. Going to recheck valves ths weekend and carb adjust. It was mentioned that my low jet could too small. I'll have to check was size are in the carb.

    Louder after valve adjustment?

The upper end sounded a little loud. So while I was doing all the other work I wanted to adjust the valve since it was probably never done.

    Louder after valve adjustment?

I just went back and looked. And I have the gaps too big. I was q the gauges wrong. I wanted to put intakes at .010mm but I actually used the inch scale. I have to regap.

    Louder after valve adjustment?

Well a lot has been done today. Changed brake pads, flushed brake system, lots of gel in the system. Adjusted chain slack. Did a valve adjustment. But here is where the strangeness begins. After the adjustment I fire the bike up, and it's louder then it normally was. Now it runs a whole lot...

    Slow speed is boggy.

It has to be idle mix. To lean. after trying and trying. I reset the idle screws and started to richen. It got Better. Still chugs at about 5-10 mph and seems to have a "dead" spot in the throttle what you are 1st starting out. I just have to keep adjusting.

Is this an xs400 or 400 special?

Looks like I have the 81 SH(H) hehe... mag wheels with disk in front drum in rear. Side covers that say special II.
