Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

I think that the confusion comes from the fact that the bearing thickness is greater and the ID is less, thus the undersize. I would think that Yamaha would use established sizes of parts in a lot of similar sized bikes, with some having overly robust parts, others simply adequate.

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

If you have access to a micrometer, you can get the thickness, width and the size of the crankshaft and get a bearing from the interweb. You'll need to get an idea of clearance and allow for that. I once rebuilt an old engine that had bearings that had to be poured and machined for clearance. I...

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

Any GOOD automotive machine shop could measure the rod bearings and order some. A check with plastigage will tell you if they need to be replaced. Having said that, any time I open up the lower end of an engine,if I don't know better I replace all bearings and seals.

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

Been a while since I was on [illness and an old Fart].but you could take the rods to a machine shop if you could find one and have them checked for hairline cracks. You'll probably have to find a race car builder that actually builds engines rather than just throwing parts in. I have a '82 xs...

    Wheel bearing checks

Auto parts stores should have the bearings based on the numbers, such as 6304,etc. They should have National and others. Get sealed bearings and maybe check an industrial supply for prices. Seals also have a number to use when finding alternative sources. VZX[I think that's right] sells quality...

    Xs400 enduro/hybrid

Question: did you ever sort out your carb jetting probs? I would say, offhand, that you're too lean, thus the stumbling. The air screw should be set at around 1-1/2 turns, and a half turn in would indicate that you need a richer pilot. Maybe raising the needle would help as well. lha

    My Bratstyle build

I think the red color looks good, and sets off the calipre. The reason for molding the gusset area is that when using a different tank, sometimes the gusset is visible and kinda ugly. It's not a very complex task, just filling in the area which would be exposed by the difference of the tank. lha

what the hell happened to my gasoline?

When covering a bike for storage, the tarp should be open at the bottom or You'll rust the bike due to trapped moisture. The amount of gas that disappeared would fill up the crankcase. lha

    Battery options...

On option #1,if your regulator is working correctly,no amount of CCAs should burn your bike. CCAs are just a # for rating starting ability. In winter conditions, running a trickle charger will warm up the battery enough to crank the motor. The only way that a strong battery could burn anything is...

    Mikuni VM32's Jetting - 79 XS400

    The VM carbs should work well on these bikes,as they've been used on 4-stroke bikes for years. You can't equate jet size with CCs,as a '73 At[125cc] has a 35 pilot,240 main,and a '73 Dt125 uses the same carb with a 22.5 pilot,and a 140 main. It's got a lot to do with slide setup,airflow,etc. Try...

    Mikuni VM32's Jetting - 79 XS400

My At3,125cc uses a 230 main jet and 35 pilot, and by the way,the choke must be pushed down for on,up for off. It's a lever that lifts the enricher valve when pushed down. lha

    dohc bobber in the making

I have a similar look in mind for my bike, and have the seat from a 1200 Yamaha that is similar, but more padding for my old butt. I have a large, wide tank from a 550 Yamaha[meant to be covered up by body plastic]. I've been buying various accessories from Ebay[good deals] for a while, and will use...
