I heard this old weather folklore many years back.
Its goes when you hear the frogs start croaking they look through the ice twice. Then spring is officaly here.Well the frogs started croaking about 4 days ago.We have had a ton of rain.We have 2 nights in a row when a hard freeze is expected I think saturday and sunday. So we`ll see how true this folklore is.

no more ice here :) temps should stay quite decent, I've already removed the extra winter insert layer from my motorcycle outfit.

I jumped the gun and planted some veatable seeds last week,Now I`ll be scrambling on how to cover them up and keep them warm during the 2 freezing nights were supposed to get.:banghead:

In Salt Lake City we had 70 degree temps about 3 weeks ago. Since then we've had record cold days and more snow in the mountains. Full on winter again, which makes me feel a little better about my bike not being ready. :)

Cafe that shouldnt be lasting for very long.I looked at a weather map showing big bubble of warm air forming in the west.Unfortunately for me temps will be below average.I just hope it dries out with 6-8 inches of rain over most of michigan rivers are flood stage.

2 nights in a row below freezing possible snow showers tonight and I planted a dam garden 3 days ago.I hope the seeds arent germinating yet but I covered it with a tarp to be on the safe side.Tulips and lilies about 6-8 inches high I covered them all up in large ziplock bags and buried dirt half way up around them.

A fresh 1/2" blanket of snow this AM with the temp 1 degree below freezing. Going to a high today of 2 degrees below freezing (guess that's what they mean by meteorology being an inexact science).
Sunny and +9 (48) tomorrow though so should be good to go all day! :bike:

Yeah we had a half inch of snow in the middle of night also.It was gone by the time i got out of bed.Glad I had all my sensitive plants covered up.

A whopping low temp of 26* for several hours last night and into the am.Im glad I had everything covered up.All the trees are just starting to have the buds open and turn to leaves I cant help but wonder how they fared?I`ll get out and have a look around to see if I can find some freeze damage.Hopefully they fared ok.We lost our entire fruit crop here in Michigan last year due to a cold snap that lasted for 4 days.Hopefully not again this year.

3 times, but frogs are known lairs... how many of those princess and frog stories turn out well

We have low predicted 32* tonight,if it happens the wather folklore will be just that about as much truth to the groundhog predicting an early spring this year.

This is somethat irks me abut Michigan weather in the spring 4-5 nice sunny days almost picture perfect weather except the wind is a bit of nuisance.Anyway I have tomatoe seeds sprouting very well and all my bulbs are doing nicely.I already to lay plastic down and cover them up once for freeze protection. Now I have to do it again for at least 1 more night. It work nicely how I did my planting this year. The soil was very moist cause we had just got 4 inches oof rain.I planted the seads covered the area with alarge tarp wich kept the soil moist giving the seeds perfect conditions to germinate and sprout. It also kept the garden area very warm.I have 4 rows of tomatoe plants coming up.So Toook the tarp off last evening cause we are getting rain. Now I have to cover them up again:banghead::mad:Oh all the trees are blooming and have leaves starting to pop out the freeze depending on how severe or long in duration will probaly kill them just like last year.

The frogs are liars LOL.2 more predicted freezes late in this week .In the mean time 4 very nice sunny warmish days have been nice.
The frogs don't lie, it's humans who attach too many hopes and dreams to the legends we make up, and then, when things don't go the way we wish, we blame the spring peepers instead of the sadistic weather Gods.

The peepers have figured out how to cope with the weather Gods' tricks - like having to endure periods of subfreezing temperatures during the breeding season. :wtf:
They can tolerate freezing of some of their body fluids - capable of surviving temperatures as low as -8°C.

I never thought it of it that way Lou but you are very correct. Those peepers have antifreeze and can freeze completely solid while a very faint heartbeat remains to keep them alive.Very resilliant creatures they are.I know this way out there but I believe scientist will experiement on humans to keep us alive for hundreds of years.Possible for long distant space travel.Just a thought or maybe I watch too many scifi movies eh?On a very positive note we have a nice stretch of weather coming.Ride ride ride

Are the weather forecasters as bad in other states as in Michigan? For exaple they put up a 7 day forecast recently shows mostly sunny all week no rain. The next day guess what 70% chance of rain and couple of other chances later in the week.I wqatch the weather which I knick name the liar channel. So today was supposed to be sunny high 72 with south winds 10-20mph now we have rain wtf?You think with all the technology these guys can be more accurate at making forecast?

At last finaly some great spring weather and signs of spring.75*-80* temps sunny skies, flowers and trees are blooming everywhere now.The red buds are blooming like crazy and so are fruit trees.Barring we dont get any more freezes things should be quite nice around here.Definately time to get the gardens put in.

So now that all the trees and shrubs are in bloom likes mother nature is going to screw us over again this year.We have a strong front moving through the area around or slightly past the weekend thats bring below freezing temps at night.Im hoping this doesnt happen again we lost our fruit crop last year due to a late freeze and its looking like its going to happen again.

... we lost our fruit crop last year due to a late freeze and its looking like its going to happen again.
Don't worry, this year is not like last year. The buds are coming out this year in May not March. Mid-May overnight frosts are not the same as last year's early April hard freeze.
It will wreck most vegetables if not covered with plastic though. At this latitude, most people are too lazy to deploy plastic coverings and we simply adhere to that ancient rule-of-thumb - never plant your veggies, or put out your geraniums, until after Queen Victoria's birthday. It works 99 years out of 100. :D
