What did you do with your XS today?

I am NOT amused!
Went for a lovely drive, had a coffee in the warm sunshine, went for another nice ride.
When it was time to go home, started away from the first stop shifted into 2nd and the chain snapped. :wtf:
Luckily I was only going as fast as an xs4r00 goes in 1st gear and the chain didn't lock up the rear wheel. But getting it home was not picnic. :banghead:
And now what? Do I buy a master link and and a master link tool? Do I take the rear wheel off and slip a new chain on? :shootme:

Hey Lou, was that a new chain put on when you did the sprocket(s) ? I'm not sure the age of mine and debating replacing it when I do the 17 tooth front sprocket.

I got a new chain and it was pretty easy to install. The tool was cheap $20 at the local shop if I remember correctly. You dont need to take off the rear wheel to do it but you will more than likely have to take off the front sprocket cover. It would be pretty hard to snake a chain around the front without it off.

If you get new sprockets a new chain would be a good idea. Worn chains will wear out the sprocket much faster than a new one.

That sucks that happened. Good luck

The PO had put a new chain on the year before he sold it to me.
I put over 12,000 kms on it (7,500 miles), lubed it with 10w40 nearly every day and adjusted it regularly. So, a new chain every 4 oil changes?

If the sprockets are partially worn, I may take the wheel off and install the partially worn spare chain which I have - and then let all of them finish their wearing together. I may not need a special tool, but I would have to learn what to do with a not-so-special tool. But I am a luddite!

We'll see what the impact driver reveals tomorrow.

Installed the front tire, filled the carbs with fuel from a home made tank, bombed around the property my shop is on and then parked it until I can find a stock tank to start the cosmetic resto. then I went to the parts store and ordered two new plugs.

I had to extend my pipes cause the rear brake lever would go down. Then H ad to lengthen the other side to match the length. So more welding I need to have done.

Actually used it to run errands today, a success in my book. high idle came back halfway through though. Looks like I'll have to give those throttle shaft seals some attention after all.

Nice long rides in the warm sun today.
The replacement chain is working nicely and I am going to follow Drewpy's advice to clean it regularly with WD-40. Finally, something it's really good for! :wink2:
When I got home I was so inspired and energized, I changed the oil and filter.

I found a way to re-cycle the caps from 5 litre ROTELLA bottles:

:D Now, for a little or this: :bike:

Here is the deal…after several days of trouble shooting I post this to see if anyone has any similar situations…

1977 XS400, no mods, all stock (mostly new parts) cycle

New

Coils, points, wires, plugs, exhaust gaskets, carbs rebuilt, bike timed (with gun), synced (with manometer), valves set, carbs cleaned, soaked, re soaked cleaned too many times to count them anymore, new emgo filters in stock boxes…only part not stock…petcock.

Bike will start - hard, runs ok, will blip and will rev strong through full range sometimes popping around 5k, sometimes cold on the right.…however will sit and idle perfect, then just stop. and start hard again usually…battery is new gel, charges just fine.

I am down to thinking it may be in my valves?

anyideas from anyone…(this is what i did today, and yesterday, and the day before) Tank is in paint shop, really was hoping I would have this beat before it came out.

thanks:thumbsup:

I fabbed some new munting brackets for my mufflers.I would give my right and left eye teeth and then some if I could get a welder.
BTW LOU very inovative they look good.

devdg i made a home made gas tank out of antifreeze plastic container for testing my bike and tuning the carbs.I took and made a hole in the cap so that a piece of fuel line fits in very tight and doesnt leak.I fill up about half full and strap on the frame where the gas tank sits.It actualy works pretty good enought put up and down the road with.

Welded a mounting bracket for my brake lite on my tail section.im thinking of shortening it up a bit looks too long
