I am sorry, I have another problem with the alt cover on my 80 xs400 special. I couldn't get the cover completeley off. This may sound stupid, but I couldn't figure out how to get the wire disconnected. Also, when I pulled it off as far as I could a small black piece of plastic about 2.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, with a slight arc to it fell out of the cover. My neighbor thinks its a chain guide. Would anyone know what it is and would anyone have a pic of what everything should look like with the cover off. Sorry for so many questions. Tx alot, have a great day!

It is the starter chain guide. The pic is from the manual I think there is some in the forum try a search for it. This question should go with your other alt cover thread:wink2:

Thank you very much. Sorry for not putting it with other thread. Can I delet the older one?

I see that teh cover on the pic is away with out removing the wires. I cant get it pulled away enought to lay it out like that. Am I missing something? Tx alot.

You have to remove the oil sensor wire and the neutral switch wire then it will slide off.

These are the ones:)
