New Guy, New Project

Doc, Pod filters are on my list of "need to buy". Today we just wheeled it around and pulled the carbs to inspect the float bowl. Did a bench check that the floats are functioning correctly. Put new grips on my buddy's motocross bike and started fabbing up a hot shoe for the new boots I bought at a pawn shop for about half price, damn things look brand new.

It's almost a hot shoe.

was asking because without airbox you need to rejet.it gets too much air and you need to give it more gas, hence the stumbling when you rev it.my 79 runs great with the airboxes and filters on,but it hesitates when you pull them off.

Well I'm definitely going to need to rejet. In addition to smashing the airbox into little pieces to facilitate removal, I've removed the mufflers. :D

:laugh:that is how i had to remove the airbox on my 700 vulcan.i hope i never have to put one back on for emissions because you have to remove the engine on that model:banghead:

Saturday's test and tune/hot laps were a blast! ! !

No problems with the bike. She was running a little hot so we turned the air/fuel screws out another turn (we'd already put 120 mains in it).

The track was fairly rough in turns 3 and 4, there were perpendicular ruts where water had drained down to the inside of the track. It's been raining here off and on for the last week and a half. Turns 1 and 2 were great though.

I was just starting to get fast and really cut my lap times down when I low sided coming into turn 4. The shifter dug in and snapped the shaft internally right at the leftmost groove for the E-Clips. New part is ordered from ebay and should be here today or tomorrow.

Now my question: Maxxis makes flat track tires for 17" rims. My bike has 16" rims. Is there any wheel out there that's a fairly straight bolt-on swap over for an 1982 xs400 maxim (DOHC)?

I'm going to get a breakaway shifter like dirt bikes have and try to get a dirt track tire on the rear and see how that helps. . .

The 82-83 DOHC xs400 SECA has an 18 inch rim.
So as far as a direct bolt on it's a go. (same frame info in the book)
Keep in mind the SECA has a six gear transmission and a 38t sproket on the rear wheel.
I don't know how that translates to the 5 gear transmission as far as RPM, Speed and actual torque at the rear wheel.

Rim size is MT2.15x18 vs MT2.50x16 on the maxim

Thanks Rookie, but they only make specific purpose flat track tires in 17" and 19" sizes. I found a 130-90/16 Kenda dual sport that should work well.

Does anyone know what the biggest sprocket that will fit on a stock Maxim wheel is?

So you are running this bike on on a dirt track? If so I would put strickly off road tires on it.
Also what is that on the exhaust pipes ,paint or ceramic?

I was not aware of that.....

I will see if the service manual gives the dimensions of the sprocket on the rear of the seca wheel... that way you might have an idea as to how big you can go...

The front tire is a dirt track racing tire, the rear is a Dual Sport 60/40 offroad/onroad which was the best I could do for that wheel size.

The pipes are sprayed with high temp header paint. I have them off right now as the tire was getting into the left pipe just a bit. I'm trying to refabricate something so it'll all clear when the suspension compresses.

My problem is finding a source. For the track I'm running I need a sprocket about 7-10 teeth bigger. A huge jump! I've only been able to find 37 and 39 tooth sprockets that are specificaly for xs400s. So I'm really asking more if anyone knows of any other bikes that have sprockets that will fit.

The only sprockets I'm aware of that will work are 35 and 38 tooth for Maxim or Seca. It appears to be a unique design, though I haven't done exhaustive research. You may be able to find a sprocket that can be modified to work. There are 15, 16, and 17 tooth front sprockets available. Maybe a 15 x 38 combo would get you the RPM's you are after?

Have you looked at Golden Tyre to see if they have tires that would work for you?

Thanks for the info Dave. I checked Golden Tyre for flat track tires, they only have 19" that are flat track specific as well. I've bought a Duro dual sport tire that works really well.

I'm considering just pulling my stock sprockets and finding a scrapyard to match them up to. Hopefully that'll work for me. I've been busy working other things on the bike for the most part and haven't really started attacking the sprockets yet.

Take a look at JT Sprockets, their listing for the Maxim includes all applicable gears. There aren't many that are a direct fit, but they provide drawings with critical measurements. If you go 15x38, which provides a 2.53:1 reduction, will that give you enough of an RPM increase? If not, a smaller diameter rear tire would help.

Golden Tyre also offer a Dual Sport tire that may work for you. Their GT201 is on my short list of DS tires.

Wow! the dimensions of the sprockets will really help me. I can compare different sprockets for different bikes and find if any will crossover and fit the xs400.

This is the rear tire I'm running now in the 130/90S16 size. It's a pretty close tread pattern to that GT 201.

FWIW: if anyone wants a rear sprocket with fewer teeth, the stock XS650 sprockets (31, 32, 33, & 34 tooth) are straight fits. Might double check the thickness, the site doesn't show that.

I thought the drawings might help. ;) I doubt you will find other gears that are an exact match, I suspect JT would have listed them on that page. But, if you can find a sprocket with the same bolt pattern, the inner diameter could be machined larger if required. Otherwise, there has to be somewhere that could make a custom sprocket.

Maybe a wheel swap is in order?
