Bought a project, looking for info.

Can't tell from the pic, but perhaps all you need to do is adjust the rear wheel properly?? Looks like it got hit and knocked the wheel out of alignment...or not. :)

Will take some pictures at a better angle. Anything you guys would like to see? Trying to assess if the bike is worth fixing or if I'm better off parting it out. Would like to fix it, but don't want to spend more than 1000 or so.

From what I can tell the swing arm looks like its bent.Raise the bike up on the centerstand and get the rear tire off the ground then take a pic from the rear.If the frame is bent I beleive you can take a torch and heat it up the bend back in place the way its supposed to be.Could also be the rear axle is bent in which a new rim would fix that.

I have one from an '81 that had spokes with drum, if yours is bent and anyone here can verify itll fit, you can have it at the cost of shipping. Do you have the carbs? Thats one thing ive noticed missing and havent seen any mention of having.

Wow, for starters you all are awesome. As I'm sure you can tell this is my first bike and first project bike all wrapped into one, so its a steep learning curve for me. I wondered if I'd get laughed off the forum for having so little knowledge but everyone has been great. So thanks for that.

Only had a few minutes to run out and snap pictures so I didn't get it up on the center stand, but here we go. I do have the carbs, they are in a box full of parts off to the side. Mikuni I believe with cone filters.

omg....I have one more picture to request. A picture of the bike from the back, as straight in line as can be. I can only imagine what happened to bend everything like that.

Best rear picture i have at the moment, will make it back out to get more sometime this weekend.

Being laughed off the forum cause you have lack of knowlege on bikes is ludicris:laugh:
Alot of us here were new bs at one time so dont be afraid to ask questions if you cant find the answers by searching.
Raise the bike up take a picture of how the spacers go on the back rim so you dont forget how they go in place.
Remove your rear tire, then check or see if the axle or swingarm is bent..Hopefully you will get lucky and find that things are just out of alignment.

Thanks, will try to do that tonight. But looking at that weld on the left side swingarm and the chain adjuster being so bent, I think I may be better off replacing at least those 2 anyhow. Found a couple of used arms for 30 or so plus shipping.

Well my brain is fried from a rough day at work, but I made it out and got it up on the centerstand. Rear wheel spins with no wobble, minor clunking as the bent part of the gear hits on something, and the brake pads are way too tight (constant grind as the wheel spins). Here is some better rear pictures for your review and advice. Thanks again all.

g'day CMF,

2 things I would like to add.

It might be worthwhile replacing the swing arm bushing now as well. I got a bronze one from TC Bros for about $30.

Also, when it comes time to insert the rear axle be careful not to damage its thread when aligning the wheel and swing arm. I wrapped the thread of mine in tape.

Cheers.

One more word of caution. Not sure if it's the same with your model XS, but still better safe than sorry :)

When you're putting the rear axle in, and the last 3mm doesn't want to go in, try flipping the left chain tensioner around. It has two differently sized holes where the axle goes through, and it only fits one way. I ruined my rear axle a while back trying to force it through by just bolting on the axle nut.

Thanks for the advice. Now onto seat issues, the seat that came with the bike is from an 81, but has no mounting hardware on the bottom, nor does the bike have any on it. What would be the best way to attach the seat now?

pics would help us help you :) I'm not sure which model you are referring to as an '81. But perhaps you'll have to manufacture some mounting hardware yourself, since it probably would not have fit anyways. Does the seat pan fit onto the frame well, and is it just the little brackets and hinges that are missing? In that case I'd say you should just try stuff out, see what fits. Get some supplies at a local hardware shop or something

I have a 79-F (I am pretty sure, if not then its the same model as yours lol) but the seat attaches to the bike simpley by two hinges and the lock, the seat pan just rests on the frame on top of 4 rubber feet. Its nothing fancy like you might imagine haha

It has got a hinge bolted to the seat and then the frame on the left (so it swings open), and the lock on the right and that's all.

I am confident that you could find rubber feet at a hardware store, screw them in and attach almost any hinge and lock set and it would work just the same.

Since it doesn't look like the bike was rear-ended cuz the rest of the rear end looks good. I think the chain came off and got wrapped around the adjuster, that's why it's all bent and the sprocket as well.

that's just my 2cents.
