Hi everybody,

This is my '82 XS400. All the work on it was done by a friend, who sold me the bike a few years back. All I've done with it is ride it -- it's fun on local roads.

This winter I'm stripping it down to give it a good cleaning and tidy it up, especially the wiring. I'm redoing the rear fender with a lower profile light and smaller turn signals front and rear -- and either drag bars or clubman bars to lower the profile some. Also thinking about a 2 into 1 exhaust.

I've been lurking for a while and really enjoyed picking up ideas and knowhow, hope to share a bit too as I get into my project.

Cheers,

Bill

Welcome to the forum:) Nice dohc 400 and thank you for joining and not lurking anymore:laugh:

Hey guys

No, single front disk. The bike has plenty of stopping power -- as long as I plan ahead!

For the rear fender, my friend cut off the two side pieces, shortened the fender from its front or forward edge to meet the saddle, which he made by shortening the OEM pan and doing his own upholstery. It mounts via two bolts that attach the seat to the frame, plus two bolts on the sides that also mount the rear turn signals. What was originally one piece is now three (two sides + the fender).

He attempted to chop the taillight but the angle was never right -- it wound up pointing up instead of back. So one of my projects this winter is to cut off the taillight, fill in and contour the big rectangular hole, and mount a taillight that will point straight back. Right now I'm thinking about using this:

Here are some pictures of the fender, and also a pic of me with my other bike, which is an '85 K100 BMW.

Nice looking bike! I like the shortened fender. I might have to try something similar next spring (no garage space to work over the winter, unfortunately).

I put clubmans on my Maxim and love it. I'll also be swapping out the indicators with something lower profile. Black bullet signals, similar to the brake light you posted.

I'm finally riding again! It was a slow winter for bike fixing -- half the time too cold in the garage, half the time too busy with family obligations. Anyway here's how my XS is looking today.

Changes over the winter: cleaned the carbs; new fuel and vacuum lines + fuel filter; Clubman bars from Mikes; new turn signals and taillight from Dime City; started installing new fastener kit; cleaned the chain; repacked and adjusted the steering head and swingarm bearings; serviced the front brake (actually just tried to clean up around the piston); replaced cheapie pods with UNI's; repositioned the electric boxes; installed a new blade fuse box....

Now that I'm riding again I remember why I like my XS so much!

Good stuff! That's a lot of progress. I like the way the low profile lights look, and you did a great job with the rear fender and brake light.
