Why would the previous owner T the vacuum tube?

So, I noticed that a girlfriend's 82 Maxim 400 has a vacuum tube that goes from BOTH carb boots, to a T, and then to the tank.

I'm correct in saying this was not the stock arrangement, correct? I assume she just needs a cap over the right side boot.

I'm having problems with this bike only firing on the left cylinder (plug is sparking on the right) so I'm thinking it's a gas flow (read carburetor) problem.

not stock configuration but.... if your carbs are balanced correctly connecting vacuum ports like that ensures they stay that way :wink2:

Don't forget that T connection when you need to sync the carbs.
Yamaha had a similar system on the XJ models called YICS - Yamaha Intake Channel System (?)

The DOHC 400's (Maxim's and Seca's) have a variant of YICS. It is a chamber in the head connected to the intake port that creates a swirl effect at the intake valve during every intake stroke.
