Gas mixed with oil in crankcase?

While riding my bike last week I started to have problems with the bike stalling out when idling. When I took it home it got worse to the point I was having trouble getting it started. After poking around a while I found a strong smell of gasoline coming from the crankcase. The vacuum petcock seemed to be pretty shot so I figured this may have been causing the mixture. I recently had some work done on the carbs and floats so I'm assuming they're working correctly. Other than changing the oil now and installing the new petcock is there anything else I should be checking? I'm also wonder if this may be an unrelated problem to the bike stalling out at idle. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Change the oil:wink2: Fix or replace the petcock if it is flowing fuel with the bike off. Make sure the floats are adjusted proper and the float valves are working. Set the petcock to pri and watch the fuel flow through the in-line fuel filter witch you should have:wink2: and see if it stops when the carb bowls are full. If the fuel flow keep going the valves are not working.

cool, thanks. just bought an in-line fuel filter. hopefully i can get this thing running and go on a ride before it gets too cold.

I had this same issue for a long time. I cleaned my carbs 5 times before I finally got it figured out. My petcock was bad (I rebuilt it but I think I will be replacing it with a non vacuum one when funds allow). In the meantime since it is just a small weep after the rebuild I installed a fuel shutoff in the line (like a petcock for the petcock). What really solved the problem though was correct float height (26mm for the brass floats) and replacing the needle AND the seat. I wish I would have just started there. They were pretty inexpensive (under $20 for needles and seats). I did 4 oil changes in 5 rides before I figured that out. Now it is running great :)
