Carb mounting on xs400 Maxim (DOHC)

I hate re-installing the carbs. It's maddening. I've had them off a dozen times, and it never gets easier. The boots are too hard and too small. [emoji35]

Edit.... I changed the thread title to be clear that I'm talking about the DOHC.

The DOHC carbs are the hardest from what I have read. There is a procedure that makes it much easier to do. There is a few theads on this in the forum I think.

I know all about it. The procedure is to drop the engine:

1. Remove the seat
2. Remove the tank
3. Loosen the air filter housing
4. Loosen the rear wheel
5. Remove top engine mounts
6. Remove top rear engine mount
7. Drop engine an inch
8. Remove carb

Adjust carb and reinstall

9. Remove carb boots from the engine
10. Press carb boots onto carb
11. Install carbs complete with boots, this takes 15 minutes to tighten 4 boot screws due to wrench clearance.
12. Lift engine. Install motor mounts
13. Remove air filter to allow access to a nut that falls out whenever I loosen the air box bolts. Spend 10 minutes with my hand inside the air box.
14. Re-secure air box
15. Adjust and secure rear tire.
16. Install tank and seat.
17. Pray that the bike runs.
18. Repeat steps 1 thru 17.

:doh:Another reason why I have four sohc xs400s'. Carbs less than 10mins on and off.

I guess you could. But I think putting the motor back in would be harder with them already on.
