Nuetral and 5th shift problems

Neutral is always hard, on any bike really in my opinion.. It's easier when the bike is not running though

I adjusted my clutch and although my bike shifts 90% better,Nuetral and 5th gear is still a problem.Nuetral when I shift down from 2cnd it always seem to miss nuetral the same when upshifting from 1st it wil skip nuetral and go to 3rd.If I tap the shifting lever very lightly sometimes it will go in the proper gear

Glad I could help!:bike: My bike is also doing much better, but I had Sh1t clogging up my clutch handle as well.

While I was searching the manual, I found this, Shift gear mechanism removal, inspection, and re-installation. Wow, the manual, It might be worth while to check this out. Is it the weak springs??? 30 years old? bent fingers? reasons for some of our problems, let me know if someone opens up the side??? Its going to be a month before I can check mine out.

Weak springs makes alot of sense and seems like a very logical explanation.I have read threads where people have replaced them with stiffer ones.Me and springs under tension dont get along very well:yikes: so I have shyed away from that area.

That is a very easy area to work on. HOWEVER... The screws are on there permanately. Hards as HELL to get off. Very high probablity of stripping screws in this project. I had to use a impact device to get the screw off.

with that said, I was able to get in there last year or two. Whent the instructions tell you to use a non-permenate threadlocking compound, might mean its meant to to be tough to undo. But tehnically its a easy area to look at. Just pull off the right side engine cover., and its right there on the bottom, left.

If its that difficult I would rather work on my other project thats on 4 wheels

So i just picked up an 81. When the bike was delivered it rolled like is was i. Neutral but when i tried to kik it over it pushed the bike like it was in gear (holding the clutch in or not, he also told me it was leaking oil from push rod so when i took the casing off the bike went into gear but its still not shifting

I am dealing with a seized motor, (I haven't done anything yet) I expect I will take off the top of the head to see if the valves have been wacked, I dont' think there is anything wrong with clutch basket side, but the other side cover will be coming off first so I can attempt to turn the crankshaft, and inspect the starter motor/gear.
just in case.
good luck

Clutches can stick sometimes. Also, it can be hard or impossible to shift with the bike not running. You may need to give the bike a roll forward or backward to get it to shift. Neutral is very easy to skip over too. You need to have the bike in neutral to kick start it and keep your hand off the clutch when you do so.
