I acquired a canadian 1982 Yamaha motorcycle which has a short version VIN stamped on the frame neck and engine which is 15G- 000841. I would like to be able to register this bike so need the complete VIN but can't seem to find a valid 17 digit number.

Post a pic of the bike. Your title or registration you got from the guy you got it from should be all you need. Bike before 82 only had the short vin.

In 1982 a 9 digit VIN code in Canada is acceptable. When the switchover to 17 digit VIN's began there was a grace period even into 1983 I believe. If Service Ontario is telling you they require 17 digits, they are wrong. Go to another location and you should be fine.

Thanks for the tip, I am in BC and will go in and get this sorted out today. It would have been easier with a registration but there was none where I picked up the bike

Yeah, I have both my bikes registered with short VINs right on the ICBC paperwork. 1976 and 1982

Finding a broker that knows what they're doing is rare.
