Hi there!
I've recently bought a 1980 xs400 that has been neglected for the last 20 years.
I really want to get this bike running again and I was wondering how do I know where to buy the best replacement parts for the bike to get it running again.
- I want to clean and replace parts of the carburetors.
- replace oil,air filters and such.
- Replace bougies.
- And I will need some spare bolts for different parts since some of them are in very bad condition.
I have so many more questions since this bike needs a lot of work!
But I was just wondering how do you guys know for sure that the parts will fit on your bike, and do you have websites that you have good experiences with.
Btw, I am new to this, so any help/tips is welcome!

Well with you being in the Netherlands not sure....here in the US there are a few places that still sell some factory parts. I do know I have seen a few places on Ebay over on that side of the world selling things. Good luck in your search.

There is a Web site named caferacerswebshop.com that is located somewhere in the Netherlands. As the name implies, they sell mostly care racer parts but may be adle to point you in the right direction. I think there are some in Germany and other parts of Europe but don't remember the names. I will look around to see if I can find any of the ads I use to get ND post them if I do.

For bolts, you can usually get standard sizes at a hardware store. I like to use stainless and replace JIS cross heads with hex.

I know that website and it is really good. Sometimes expensive but I've had good experiences with them. But they don't really sell like a gasket set or stuff like that that I'm 100% sure of will fit...

Thanks! I will keep that in mind. So stainless steel won't be bad? Or should I go for Galvanised?

Go stainless..............add some anti seize to them............all I ever do is replace with stainless....there are a few places that sell stainless bolts in a package deal for the 400s...........

I always try to get rid of the JIS screws on the carbs there a PITA..............

Not sure being across the pond how your hardware stores are....... I have a great one just up the street from me and will pay a little more to have such a selection.......

Hiya, bike looks complete so that’s a good start. I’d recommend refurbishing the existing Mechanical stuff before replacing it, especially in the carbs. Electrical stuff not a problem to replace, especially things like regulators.
My bike had some key bits missing, like engine mounting bolts, which I got from The Netherlands in the end!
Just a word on stainless vs galvanised. For anything that’s strength dependant, galvanised is stronger, plus it won’t rust unless you damaged the coating. why is the gear lever on the seat?
Have fun

Thanks! I miss all the bolts for the gear box cap. I guess that they used them for something else. In all my excitement I didn’t notice that till the bike was delivered and the deal was done. Bought the bike at a local dealer who had it stored somewhere in the back.. so who knows what happened.. I’ll figure it out though! Do you remember where you bought the bolts?! I am a Dutchie so in the Netherlands would be easy for me! I’ll buy galvanized ones if possible.
Thanks for the help!!
