Hello. For some strange reason one of the things I enjoy doing is taking the parts from one motorcycle and adapting them to another. I picked up an 81 400II, a couple years ago, running but with a charging problem, (still working on that issue). I was also given an 83 xj550 maxim with a ruined engine. I'm working on taking the wheels and front end from the maxim and using them on the xs. One problem is the maxim has a 45 tooth sprocket vs. 37 tooth for the xs. I would like to keep the gearing the same.

My question is: Has anybody had a custom sprocket made? And if so were you satisfied with the result?

Thanks,
Harvey

I had one made years ago for a ZX-7R Ninja...forgot the company name,..but it was a quality piece,....quite a bit better than the stock replacement I just got off ebay for the XS.

If you are going that route you should look into custom front and rear in 520...and maybe an aluminum rear ...would save quite a bit of weight/parasitic drag...the stock stuff is stupid heavy ...and overkill for such a small bike.

Thanks for the idea about the smaller chain size. Had an opportunity to do a mock-up today. Changed swingarm, put wheel on. May have a problem with sprocket alignment, may have to shim front sprocket and make different spacers for rear axle. I also found out xs400, xj550, and 1979 xs650 swingarms can be interchanged, all the same width where they attach to frame, and use same diameter bolt.

Hardtailed, I apologize for inadvertently misleading you. I wasn't specific enough in my post. When I referred to bolt, I meant swing arm bolt, not the axle bolt, (which is 20mm for the 650).

you can get offset front sprockets, larger sprockets (1 tooth up at front = 3 on rear) I run a 17 front and 43 rear on my xs.

the chain has a better life as it doesn't have to go round such a small angle!

I bought 10mm offset front sprocket from xam-japan.co.jp, the problem for you is that it is for 520 chain.
Havnt tried it on yet, so i dont know what kind of headache the rear will be, i plan to buy blank off ebay and get the holes machined to match.
