My alternative to a sportster tank

I rubber mounted a sporty tank to my wife's xs400 a while back, and happened upon a sportster 48 seat a while later. The 48 seat fits the frame rails almost perfectly right where she's comfortable. The problem is the seat is made to sit lower than the tank, and right against it. On the 400 there's like 3" in between, looks a little weird. Sooo, I looked around, and an idea I had a long time ago came back. Axe the spare XS650 tank I have, and use that. It's just about the right length to fill the gap, and I'll adjust it, and the seat to make it right.

Basically the idea for the tank is:
  • cut out 2" in the back, 1 1/2" in the front
  • cut the bottom off flat
  • eliminate the pinch welds
  • retunnel
  • move stock gas cap to center

It'll be a shit load of work for me, as I'm a shitty welder, and don't have any experience building tanks. Oh well, that's half the fun for me.

Here's what I'm looking to achieve.... more or less.

Opinions?

That does sound like a lot of work, but as you say, if that is half the fun, then go for it. If it were my design, I would go with an aftermarket cap, maybe an elevated one. I'd remove the yammy logo and weld in bungs for a clear sight tube, and a big obnoxious-sticking-out petcock....

Wait, maybe that would defeat your purpose here. :)
