XS400 Bobber build/first post

If your like a lot of us, you will get very good at taking the carbs off and on the bike. Most need to at least a few times. Seldom get it right the first time.
A complete tear down with throttle shaft removal to remove the seals so you can let the metal parts soak in a carb dip. Will help get them clean.
Some have had good luck with ultra sonic cleaners or Pin-Sol.

its been awhile. here ya go guys. couldnt help from showin current pics. still gotta finish it. think im gonna break it down again. depends on how this "winter" lasts. lol
anyone name that song?

might not be enough fuel to leak over to the right carb. How much fuel in the tank?

give the bowls a few taps the wake up the floats a bit and lean the bike over to the right too.

Bike looks sweet, it so wanted to start but was just teasing you:laugh: you gotta hate that you hear a little blub blub blub and you get all excited like YES she gonna fire up ANY second now and then it just dies in the arse:wtf: id agree with drew it sounds like the fuel delivery isnt happening? should be an easy fix

yeah its deff fuel. ill have it running and the right side pops from time to time. but not all the time. theres like 1/4 tank right now, but theres been half a tank and it still did it. we took the carbs off and re cleaned them like 10 times. suprising i know lol. gonna go rob the throttle off my 125. its shorter, so im just gonna switch with the stock 400 one. right now the bars are too small for the stock throttle housing and the M/C for the front brake. and maybe ill respray a my fender. who knows. its nice again today. hopefully i get some shit done!

so pushed the bike outside today cuz its nice out, took some pictures, and made a video of it runnin for yall. see? im makin progress haha

as for the oil thats pouring out of the cam seal, im ordering a new one as soon as im done typing this. haha and since there's a fuel delivery issue, and im sick of messing with the carbs, im gonna give them to my dads buddy to fix. who knows, maybe i can trade the 400 for one of his 750 H2's? haha. i wish.

so yeah. sorry it was bogging down. ill post another one when im riding around on it lol. but damn its pretty loud

looks good dude! im diggin the video updates wayyy more than the written stuff, maybe ill join you on that and pick up a chaep cam.

xs400D - yeah i posted it to facebook. got a lot of "you made that? holy cow! awesome!" comments lol

FUBAR - i like video updates better i think. plus, its less time spent skipping pages and reading. and this way, i dont have to take like 3 pics of one thing. i can just rotate a camera around it lol.

Drewpy - it was running fine in the begining, then it bogs down when i give it throttle, like the left hand cylinder stops running, then itll fire after that hesitation, but still not well enough yet. might get some new plugs, cuz i switched them around, and now its the left side that DOESNT always fire, and before it was the right that wouldnt. but there is plenty of spark, and they're both new.:confused:

^ i hear ya. if i use a fender, its gettin the home bent, not weld sissy bar and p pad treatment. i love the rawness of the bike with no fenders, but i also like to be able to skateboard randomly wherever im at, so if i run the fender sissy set-up its so i can strap my board to it. haha

Have you checked the lead and plug? Also might be worth checking the compression, it might be a bad seat/seal on the inlet valve hence the blowing back through the carb, try checking the pilot airway is clear, i found the left pilot snapped off on one of mine which was why it wouldn't idle but would rev up once it got onto the mainjet stage of the rev range.

This might be worth a read for you mate http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390

haga - yeah me and my dad went over everything with the mulit meter and checked spark and compression, compression was weaker on one side, but not enough to matter IIRC. and i was thinking timing as far as blow through goes. thanks for the link. ill take a look at it.

geek - dude, i cant even describe it. ive been like this for 6 months. lol

my carbs are cleaned, guess there was some brass shavings on the bloats? prob from my fittings for the petcock. and also i missed one of the pilot jets cuz it was clogged. figures. ill have the carbs in my hands 2morro afternoon and installed on friday at the latest. but if i get antsy ill prob go to my dads and toss them on early 2morro. like as soon as i get them. lol
