ECP's '82 Rebuild Thread

Those coils are stock for your model. The cut wires look like the coil and pickup assembly(the orange and the red-white are for the coil). The neutral switch o-ring do go bad I have replace mine on both of the bikes and if you need a non-cracked switch I have a bunch of them I can sell you one for cheap:)

Got the carbs "done" for now [I'll probably need to go back in and re-jet once I get it running].

Nice bike dude, where did you get the filters from btw? They llok awesome i love the fact it has XS on them too wouldn't mind a set for my baby.

Could you send us a link please?

Cheers matey

I'm happy with the results of the carbs. They aren't "show" clean, but they are clean. I first cleaned out the old gas with carb cleaner+ thinner.... then I soda blasted them. After that I threw them in the dishwasher (shh!) to dissolve the soda. They came out with the dull finish which I kinda like on the carbs. The chrome caps look better in person, they are pitted, but not bad.

Next up is tidying up the electronics.... got my new ignition in, so I have keys now.

Chris, I will keep you in mind for the neutral switch cover... I welded this one up and I'm gonna see if it still leaks.

those air pods are great with the XS moniker on them. spray the carbs with WD40 or ACF50 and they'll stay good!

Good tip.

Okay guru's.... anyone know what thread is in the petcock and carb inlet fittings? Both female. I measured the petcock fitting and it looks to be 1/4NPT, I'll have to pull out the fitting on the carb to measure it... but I figured I'd ask you smarty pants guys first so I don't have to :D [Playing with the idea of an -AN line system]

Yes, I can't wait to see what these carbs look like on the bike. Saw the cheaper filters on ebay but I spent a little more for these. Glad I did, I love the oval shape.

yeah those 3 wires go from the TCI box to the electronic cam timing unit on the left side of the cam.

what is an AN line system? inline system?

So I got it mostly back together. Threw in a good battery and did some testing. I have headlight; taillight; horn; neutral light; brake light; no signals and no ignition. It appears to be missing half the ignition fuse connections (and the fuse).

Not really sure what's supposed to go there and why it isn't there...

Also looked at the TCI box and there's paint pen writing [like from a wrecker] that says: "91 Yamaha Twin"....... so I'm assuming someone put in a different TCI and that's why there's some mystery wiring going on. The connector at the TCI also looks melted a bit at one blade, maybe I should get a used TCI that's actually from an 82 XS and run stock wiring.

PS, here's a shot of the carbs

Fit's good with the stock battery box if anyone's wondering. Although I won't be using the stock box in the future, it's good to know.

Electronically speaking, there shouldn't be too much difference from an '80 to an '82 right? Searching for a used harness, found a nice looking stock '80 harness.

Okay, after a few hours of scratching my head... I think I know what's up....

Frame code is 14V, engine code is 2LO. So it's a 79 engine in an 82 frame. Kinda explains the weirdo wiring maybe?

Any suggestions?

Got a proper stock wiring harness; a proper ignitor box; drag bars; a new [blade] fuse block, and a couple more goodies on their way to me.

So hopefully this will sort out my issues.

Gonna pick out some new brake/clutch levers + perches too. Stared at the bike for a while... kinda figured out how I want to build the rear end/seat.

Also spotted the number on the swingarm is 4R4! Looks like I have the Frankenbike! Gonna be worse when I get finished with it :D

Did a little bit of work on some of the old parts:

And put on a couple of the new parts:

Which one should I use? Longer one or shorter? I'm leaning towards the shorty.

Note the new drag bars. I'm kinda digging the look it has going on right now.

She's looking FINE
My bike's PO did a job with the fusebox and hardwired the ignition at the fusebox, IOW fuse missing!
There was a time I was about to throw a tantrum when my flasher lights stopped working. I didn't have the 3-prong female connector attached to the flasher relay. I was ok  The flasher relay is usually mounted on the frontside of the battery box so I don't know where you have yours re-located.
