Ready for Top End Rebuild

Hang on! That doesnt explain why the oil ring got all damaged, or was that just totally unrelated and coincidence?

Oil ring got bent because I never did a ring job before. Of course, I never lapped a valve seat before either! This was all a learning process for me - and it has been a ton of fun and satisfying to play with this motor.

Good news, rebuild of the motor is complete.

Per some excellent advice, I kicked over the motor over with switch off a few times to get some oil moving around the engine.

Then came the moment.

With my wife manning the fire exstinguisher, I set the choke, cracked the throttle and hit the button. To my utter amazement it started just like always - after about a 1/2 second on the button!

Let it run for about a minute, then I advanced the throttle gently up to 3000 rpm for a moment and back down to idle. Then again, and again. Then I let it idle. Then I cut the choke in half and she kept running but at a lower rpm, as expected.

Elated, I decided that this was enough for one night, so I shut it down. I can now work on some fine tuning, get a fresh compression check, and check the bolts.

But she sounds great!!!

Thank you all for your support, advice, and encouragement through this activity. This was the most challenging mechanical task that I have personally undertaken. It is funny, but even though I worked in solitude I never felt alone. Indeed, I was not.

What a great community. Cheers, all!

Hey is there any way we can join the cussing smiley to the bike riding smiley? If we could have the bike riding smiley cussing that would be ultimate.

So have the bike riding smiley exactly like it is but replace the head with the cussing head, and still have it swaying from side to side and also keep the comic strip style text box with the scrolling cussing...

Thought some of you might like to hear it run.

The observant will notice about one minute into the video that the high beam indicator light 'lights up' with engine revving. I had the light switch unbolted from the handle bar at the time of the recording. It is now re-installed and that fixed that.

Your humor, and encouragement, are greatly appreciated.

FYI, back in '85, I had a wonderful 6-months teaching in Brisbane. I sure enjoyed my time in OZ.

Cool glad you didnt take it the wrong way:) What were you doing when you were in oz, studying? Btw you bike sounds nice and strong in the video, congrats! Hope my sound as good as that when im done.

With my wife manning the fire extinguisher. That should have made you feel safe. Congratulations on getting it running.[/QUOTE said:
I need a night light too!

All kidding aside, I used to work on Randolph AFB in aircraft maintenance reliabilty. Every time you start a plane, someone has the job of standing by with a fire extinguisher. I figured that the first start after some major maintenance on the bike that the same would be prudent.

I had the opportunity to go teach college at the Uni. I had just finished my MS in Comp Sci and figured that it would be the best for an extended visit (before I got into my career.) I spent weekends traveling around the coast up there and did spend a week in Sydney, down by The Rocks. Great experience.
