Maybe your bike isn't very normal;). I'm pretty sure that my 79 and 81 had three but it's been awhile since I played with an Xs400

    ignition fuse short

Spark plugs shouldn't cause this issue. @tstidham isn't talking about the headlight circuit. He's talking about all of the other sites that are inside. Look for any bare wires or melted ones. A loose or corroded ground can also do this.

    Bought a 1978 Yammaha XS400 (E)!

A quick fix for the mirror. Take the mirror out of the hole it mounts in. Mix up some JB weld and fill the hole with it. Place the mirror in the hole and adjust it to where you want it. Let the JB weld dry before you go out and ride.

    XS 250 not shifting?

Did you remove the shift lever? Could you have put it on a spline off?

    I'm baaaaaaack

Hello. I am new here but not new. I used to have the username OleDoc but can't for the life of me remember my password. Came back around because I am thinking about picking up another 400 and I might still remember some information on them. My 79 xs400 was my first bike and I had a lot of fun on it.
