    77 xs400 starting problems

Yeah I am right there with you captchrome. It was finally running right so I ordered a chain and a ground anchor, knowing that crime was an issue. I went on a crazy long ride saturday and decided that 1 night in the parking lot would be okay. Had the chain but no ground anchor. It was chained up...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Looks like this is the last post. Bike was stolen out of my parking lot last night. First night it was there too. Finally got it running great and some fucknut decided to steal it. If you're in the bham alabama area I guess keep a look out for it. Hard to miss an orange motorcycle. Thanks for...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Alright cool thats how I've been doing it. Been working on sealing an exhaust leak. I know there's a crush washer in there but this one has a spacer of some kind on it.left side looks toast. Anybody seen anything like that before?

When setting clearance for your valves with feeler gauges, how do you determine the correct fit? Should there be absolutely no way to get a .006 feeler gauge in there? Should it be kinda difficult to get it in there? In the machine world .001 is .001 so nothing over the tolerance should fit...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Yeah captchrome I was thinking about shimming it up first to see if that starts to produce some results. Ive got some shims of various thicknesses that I am gonna play around with today. The needle im running is the y264 that I came across on this forum, was told this was a very close...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Thats me being a poor communicator. The idle is fine, sits at around 1.2k rpm. Im dealing with a flatspot that starts at 3k rpm. With the jetting and mix screw at 3 turns out I am able to get it up to 4k rpm. It doesn't idle there that is just a note about the progress I've made and that I think...

    77 xs400 starting problems

I think I might be right there with you now captchrome. Every time I wrenched on this bike I get it higher into the rpm band and it starts running a little smoother. Ran out of time today but I think I got the jetting good so I was working in the mix needle. 3 turns out and its getting me up to...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Had some time to work on it today after work. Ive gone through all electrical components related to ignition, new points gapped and timed with a light. We know the auto advance works and I measure voltage at coils as well as resistance of coils and all checks out. I dont wanna fool with the cam...

Can anyone enlighten me on the process for checking the timing on the timing chain to ensure its not a tooth off?

    77 xs400 starting problems

Okay I see now. Yeah initially I timed it to the LF tick after you mentioned advancing it i thought you meant idle timing. Ill bring it back to the factory mark. Would it hurt to ride it 6 miles back to the garage with idle timing at the 20 degree mark? It does advance i suspected that might...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Hey captchrome you suggested that I should advance my timing. Im guessing this is to make up for lost compression due to wear and age. How much advance are we talking here. There are no marks to note degrees of advance just a TDC, LF and the full advance marks. I played around with it and got it...

    77 xs400 starting problems

After doing some thinking and riding this bike to and from work for a few days I still think im getting a weak spark. Seeing as how it isn't a throttle dependent problem, it happens at all throttle positions from cruising at 40mph with the throttle barely open at 3k rpm to raw dogging the...

    77 xs400 starting problems

Alright installed and now its charging, flat spot persists but now that I can rule out poor spark I should be able to do a proper tune and timing check
