    Which wheel bearings?

I have a 1981 XS400 special II and I used kits from All Balls Racing that fit fine. Front is part number 25-1311 Rear is part number 25-1246 The kits have both bearings and seals. They fit a couple of different bikes as I recall, so some of the seals are not needed for the XS400 and I recall...

    Fuel Banjo Bolt

Search for the part number (1L9-14166-00-00). Here is one on eBay - https://www.ebay.com/p/1423319222

    XS250 Engine fade, power loss

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. There is a restriction between the tank and the carb float bowls.

What did you do with your XS today?

Here is #8 of 13, Barnegat Inlet Lighthouse at Barnegat Light, NJ Old Barney is probably my favorite of the lot, and it is good I got to this one early because this location is in a pretty popular beach community. There is only one bridge to get on or off of Long Beach Island and there are...

Sidestand hangs up on kick stand

The '80 and newer specials had a different center stand due to the longer fork length. I am guessing you have a special with the longer front end paired with the shorter center stand from a '79 or older bike.

Should the "choke tube" in the carburetor bowl be submerged in gas or no?

The "brass something" pressed into the passage in the float bowl is the starter jet. It is very common for this passage and jet to be clogged with debris and not allowing fuel from the float bowl to be sucked up into the brass tube that feeds the enricher circuit. Make sure you can spray brake...

    Kickstart question

The TCI is engergized by turning the key "On" and having the kill switch in "Run." You need these switches to be in On/Run regardless of whether you are kicking or button pressing for a start.

    Chains of pain

You are correct! The original chain supplied by Yamaha is a standard, non o-ring chain. O-ring and X-ring chains are wider than the standard chain, so don't be surprised if there is rubbing on hard parts of the frame or on the engine case if you use one, and be ready to switch it out if this...

    What Chain Do You Use?

You don't have to purchase them from Yamaha. Besides OEM, you can source these from JT or Sunstar. For those in the US, MikesXS also sells the replacement sprockets. There are two different rear sprockets that were used, so make sure of the one you need. The XS400 specials made from 1980-82...

And away she goes...first real start.

Having the fuel level set properly is pretty important to getting the mixture correct. I think you will have to look at everything on the carbs one-by-one and checking how things improve or not. I feel that tuning the carbs is really the most important aspect of getting a bike to run correctly...

Did a rebuild and forgot cyclinder o rings

Don't know if that is the cause of your issue. But those cylinder base o-rings are there for a reason. Maybe install the o-rings and let us know if it helps?

What did you do with your XS today?

There is: you have to measure runout of the rim both side to side and top to bottom and adjust the spoke nipple tensions in the affected parts of the wheel until you remove the lumpiness. Then as you torque up all of the spokes, you keep checking trueness and correct any new runout issues as you...

What did you do with your XS today?

Both plugs are probably firing just fine. The flames from the left side and none from the right probably indicate that the carbs are not synchronized and probably the mixture in one is rich vs the other lean. Engines running without pipes are indeed pretty funny. You can take loud straight...

What did you do with your XS today?

I think that doing this is underrated - it sends good vibes to the sealant that is curing. The noises are essential for this process to work correctly, in my opinion.

What did you do with your XS today?

I agree. I think this is going to be a good upgrade, but the bike must be used a lot for the cost to make sense. After 6000 miles so far I have found this bike to be perfect for the type of riding I prefer, and my confidence in its reliability is really high. Also being able to maintain it with...

What did you do with your XS today?

New spokes installed! I have had some spokes on both wheels that were frozen on the nipples since I have owned the bike. Over the past three years I have managed to free up some of them with heat and penetrating oil, but there are some really stubborn ones that refuse to give up. So, I pulled...

    Pilot screw broken in carb

I think this is probably what I would try. You might need to order some specialty bits to get one small enough. Regarding the high idle - if you have tried turning the idle down and that has not worked, then you most likely have an air leak. I would suspect the throttle shaft seals. You can test...

What did you do with your XS today?

I straightened my fork upper tubes. When I refurbished my bike, I knew they were bent, but didn't have the means to address them. And I was close to the end of the project and just wanted to ride the bike before the season ended. But when I rode and let go of the handlebars, the bike would start...
