    Carb problems

Clean clean clean those carbs, brother. Once you know they are clean, clean em again. Then once you know they are clean...clean them once more. Build a manometer while you are at it so you may sync your carbs once you reinstall them.

    Sold the 'ole Maxim

Well, I parted ways with the black beauty late last year. She was a good bike while I had her and I'll always remember the good times I had (thanks to the help I got from the forum.) I rode that bike for thousands of miles all over Texas, rain or shine. :bike: She was sold to a good friend of...

New member here, 83 XS400 Maxim

I would say "yes" to rebuilding the MC. The kits for that and the caliper are available online if there is not a shop near you that can get it.

New member here, 83 XS400 Maxim

Sweet bike! My brake lines were also the originals when I bought my bike. My maxim only had 3,000 miles on it and I think it even had the original tires:eek: which I promptly changed to the Kenda Challengers. Go with braided stainless brake lines and update your brake pads. If you...

What did you do with your XS today?

You stick with the kenda 676 tires? My kenda challengers have about 6,000 miles on them and it's time for a new set.

What did you do with your XS today?

Gave the maxim a tune up and a bath today. New spark plugs. Checked carb sync. New air filter. New 90 degree shaped fuel filter and new fuel line. Fresh batch of Rotella T6 oil for another 5,000 miles of good riding. I noticed Shell packages the T6 in a newer looking container. I checked the...

What did you do with your XS today?

Are you using a manometer to sync your carbs? I found instruction on this forum on how to build a "U" shaped manometer for a good carb sync.

Reducing LOUD exhaust noise with db killers

Couldn't agree more on that issue Dave brought just brought up. I met some sport bike riders this weekend at bike night downtown. It's safe to say we can throw the stereotypical "sport bike guys" in that category as well. Loud pipes, annoying personalities and even worse, extremely reckless...

What did you do with your XS today?

Rinsed off the bike and then watched it roll over 14,000 miles on the odometer on the way back home from work:thumbsup:. Re-synced the carbs. Thinking about customizing the air box setup here this winter. The old air intake joints are starting to shrink from age:thumbsdown:. Already mapped out...

    Tail Rack and Givi Case

About a month ago, I purchased a tail rack from a fellow xs400 member here on the forum. I have been strapping down a backpack on it with some bungees but that simply was not good enough. I then purchased a Givi tail case for extra storage. So far I love it!

    Steel Brake Line for DOHC

Hey Dave, glad you asked. I think I have put at least a couple thousand miles on these Vesrah pads since I bought them:thumbsup:. I haven't noticed any damage to the rotor. The Vesrahs are definitely more responsive than the stock pads. I notice their usefulness mostly in the city with these...

For Sale - XS 400 luggage rack - used $30 SOLD

Very cool. That leads me to think I can simply bolt it onto the bike. I saw the photos of your setup and my bike is identical to your 82. I see that the rack bolts to the turn signals and that back bar or sissy bar whatever it is called. In that case, I would like to purchase this rack from...

    Sprocket question?

I recently did a chain/sprocket swap on my maxim as well. I stayed with the stock sizes. I could have sworn 35T was the stock size on the rear...at any rate JT is a good brand.

What did you do with your XS today?

Yes, the weather here is polarizing as well. It was 90 Fahrenheit today and will be the same tomorrow. With the summer heat on it's way, like everyone else I want to get all the good riding in while I can. On the other hand, we have also been getting lots of rain. In fact, our 10 year drought...

What did you do with your XS today?

Made a 400 mile round trip to the gulf coast this past weekend, my longest trip yet:thumbsup:. Left on Friday morning, made it there for a Houston Astros game with the family then woke up and came back on Saturday morning. The majority of the trip was wide open road and blue skies. The maxim did...

Hetip on '82-83 XS400 oil filter cover - try this if it breaks

It works just fine. I have put 6,500 miles on my bike since I swapped to the Kawi cover. No problems.

    Fuel Economy DOHC

Since I have owned my bike, I have religiously tracked the mileage I get from each and every tank and also take into account the riding habits I had to use for that given riding period. Concerning my Maxim, it is stock. Carbs run just slightly on the richer side. I use 87 octane from Valero...
