82 Maxim Won't Start, Clicking Solenoid

Thanks for the advice - already on it! I saw a rebuild kit but due to time decided just go buy the full part. When I have some free time on my hands I'll be picking one up to see if I can get it going or not.

82 Maxim Won't Start, Clicking Solenoid

Thanks for the response and sorry about the delayed response. Took your advice and was still coming up blank so I ended up dropping the bike off with a buddy who confirmed it was the starter motor. Ordered one off ebay and it should be arriving tomorrow!

82 Maxim Won't Start, Clicking Solenoid

A couple weeks ago my bike started up fine in the morning, then after work wouldn't start so I bump started it, got home and put the battery on the charger. Next day, same thing - bike started in the morning, nothing at the end of the day. Both times I was just getting a click at the solenoid...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Got the mufflers (thanks to user 1982 XS400J Maxim!) and popped them on - they sound a thousand times better! The high pitched exhaust sound has been replaced with a low rumble, it sounds more like a motorcycle than a dirtbike now. I did take some before and after videos but my phone mic is...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Adapter for the mirrors came in so here is a photo of the bike. It doesn't make a massive difference, but I definitely prefer them. They just look cleaner and less dorky to me. Next up is new slipons. User 1982 XS400J Maxim was awesome enough to hook me up with his so hopefully I'll have those...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

All season I have been running on 20w50, don't know the brand but I picked it up at a Yamaha dealership. This last Thursday I changed to the Rotella oil I've seen recommended here, 15w40. Holy crap, what a difference! The bike shifts noticeably smoother than it ever has. Also, all season if the...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

After just under a month with the new bars I have to say that I'm really happy with them. At first it was a bit more strain on my back but I've already adjusted to it. In the past week and a bit I've done three rides of around an hour to an hour and a half of highway driving and I think it does...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Of course they are! :P Ill call the Yamaha dealer by my house tomorrow and see if they can get these in and what the price is. If it's no good I may just bite the bullet and pay the high shipping.

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Thanks for the heads up! I had no idea. I just checked bike bandit and I'm not seeing the part anywhere. Any idea if this is a generic part or if the XS400 ones fit the Maxim? Theres a Maxim pair on eBay for $5 but shipping to me is $25 so I'd like to see if I can get them cheaper - or at least...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Is this what you're talking about? If so, is this as simple as just loosening the bolts, pushing down a bit and tightening back up?

Put my new bars on! I ended up not ordering those ones off Fortnine, I picked some out of a catalog and got my mechanics to order them. Happy to say that it doesn't seem like I need to get shorter cables, everything works fine. I like the look of them much more than I thought I was going to but...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Beautiful, thanks. I'll order them as soon as I get rid of the bars I bought. Great! Are they the bars on this one? http://www.xs400.com/attachments/20180510_124423-jpg.31575/ Either way, thats a great looking bike.

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Does anybody know if these bars would work on the Maxim? https://fortnine.ca/en/emgo-7-8in-universal-street-sport-handlebar I wanted to try out some different bars just for the sake of trying, and to see if a bit more forward of a position would help out on the highway a bit. I bought some used...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

Woo! This was the last thing I thought was essential for me - got some saddle bags on my bike! I use my bike for work and often get asked to drive across town to deliver documents, so I always have ride to work with a backpack and use it to deliver stuff. I just have a regular backpack so it...

Will you damage anything running a bike with a vacuum leak?

Fixed it! Turned out to *not* be my carb boot... the vacuum line from my petcock had a small crack on the back of it that I couldn't see unless I was at just the right angle. I had extra vacuum line so I popped it off, put a new one on and the bike sounds fantastic in under five minutes. I now...

Will you damage anything running a bike with a vacuum leak?

My mechanics did a full job on my carbs a couple months ago, no idea about the shaft seals though. I couldn't tell you anything about how the carbs have been set up, but the mechanics I use are awesome. The bike was running fantastically for the last couple months right up until the other day...

Will you damage anything running a bike with a vacuum leak?

Grabbed some carb cleaner and sprayed around my boots - definitely a vacuum leak on one carb. The clamp had come a bit loose so I tightened it up, which greatly helped. Theres still a small leak though, show by spraying the boot, but I'm not seeing any cracks or anything. I'll have to give a...
