So I got around to replacing the standard seat. I really didn't like the big hump for the pillion. Most of the eBay seats are very short so I found one on AliExpress the same length as the original. https://m.aliexpress.com/item/33023657429.html I had to chop the mounds off the seat and...

    Struggling above 7000 rpm

Difference between 135 and 140 doesn't seem noticeable. It will be a bit richer now but it makes me think that the main jets aren't the problem. Everything is perfect up to 7000 rpm. I'm wondering if the needle setting or float settings could be the cause of such an issue, I've never changed...

    Struggling above 7000 rpm

Hi, On my 81 special it runs great to 7000rpm, then it struggles. It has pod filter on the Y hose and stock exhaust. I switched the main jets from 135 to 140 but same problem. Could this be a float level or needle issue. Thanks

Found someone on the forum who had the same issue and used a Dremel on their tank. But they noticed the problem before trying to screw it in so didn't incur any damage. The is the problem with trying to work outside on the bike after work just as it's getting dark.

Finally got around to doing the carbs. Got some carb kits online and stripped them down. Overall were looking pretty clean inside. The only thing from the carb kit I used was the float valve and seat. Northing else seemed to fit. The diaphrams for the top were too small and the jets we're all...

Fitted a new brake hose and new fluid. It's much smaller diameter, does this matter? Got the 900mm one but it's a tad too long, would be better with 800mm I think. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B07GT1PHSR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image&th=1

I asked at a few shops but they always just want to know a make model and year of car as a response to any question. I've ordered some off eBay. It's shipping from France but I'm not in a hurry for it as the bike is running perfect already. Going to see about replacing the brake line and...

Hi, yes I expect that's the case. The bike is running great now but I'll look out for some copper core cable. It's really not that easy to find in shops these days though.

Got myself a nice 5 3/4 inch light and new housing and finally got rid of the massive stock indicators. I got some nice cheap bullet style indicators, but they had white light bulbs in them which weren't very bright. I pulled the insides out and replaced with T10 orange LEDs. Very bright...

Got some new iridium spark plugs and replaced the spark plug leads which had 1981 on them so I assume are original. I replaced the HT leads with some AC delco ones. I just used the part that normally goes to the distributor to go to the plug and attached the cut cable to the coil. After I'd...

Sounds like good advice. I feel like the best solution is copper washers anealed when reused. I'm going to try that and see how I get on. Thanks

Nice, yeah that's what mine must have looked like 40 years ago. I'm not going to spend $20 and wait a couple of weeks for washers though. What's the best option for something available from a local parts store? EDIT: Had a look online and this seems to be a common question. Looks like the...

New universal 3/8 petcock and adapter plate should be here soon. Would a modified 42.5mm petcock be of any use to anyone I wonder? What sort of washers do you use on your petcocks? Mine seems to have some old disintegrated fibre washers. I'm guessing a copper washer would be best to prevent...

Got a new left side xs650 manual petcock. I know that these need the lever modified so you can get on the reserve. I don't have a grinder so spent an hour filing it down. Went to put it on the bike and the hole spacing is wrong by about 4mm. So I've ordered the 3/8 adapter plate and...

Enclosed how? I have after market bars but bars are hollow. It's probably just a cap on the end if anything. The only thing I had to cut was the hand grips and the plastic throttle handle for which I cut the end off with a hack saw. Post a photo and it might help. But is someone has welded up...

Underslung looks great but I don't think I could get used to it. ordered new fork seals but they didn't come with the external dust covers. The forks don't seem to be leaking but the dust covers are falling apart and held together with tape. I thought they came together. What do I order to get...

Craig, fair point on petrol damaging the paint. I haven't done a test but we'll see. It's supposed to be resistant to chemicals. If it keeps getting in a mess I can always redo it with the engine enamel I have left over as that says its petrol resistant. Mike, thanks for the compliments. Agree...
