Made it from fiberglass. The seat was cut down from stock, and upholstered.

Just google "Emgo shorty muffler". They're all over the web.

    1981 xs400 project

Hey David, I have a 750 front end on my 400. (and a 750 tank) I didn't do the front end swap, but the stem was machined to the 400 width as I'm using 400 bearings. I wouldn't recommend widening the fork clamps in the trees; 750 forks are much bigger than 400 forks. I want to say 37mm vs. 33mm...

Very cool, Drew. I'm going to have to look into this.

    Battery options...

Well, if you get rid of the electric start, cold cranking amps will be a non issue. But you will need a battery as this bike needs one to run. With no electric start, you can go way down in size but you need to know how many amps your charging system produces. If you choose a battery with too...

    Battery options...

Hey hardtailed, Travis is right, your choices are very limited with keeping the electric start. However, this battery is a couple inches shorter than stock (same length/width) and it's got 12v/12ah and 246 cold cranking amps, which is plenty. Edit for the link...

    Great source for Acessories

While on the subject, these guys will hook you up too: http://www.roccitycafe.com/store.php http://www.mikesxs.net/ http://www.benjiescaferacer.com/forsale.html (mostly hondas, but some universal stuff too)

    Intro and Build

Whatever you gotta do to make it work! I built my first bike in my kitchen. What are your plans for it?

I think it'll suit your needs just fine. A buddy that I ride with has an xs1100 cafe, and while he blows my doors off on the straights, he can't even get close to me in the twisties.

    some modded xs400's

Wow! It does seem like a little more work than I'm willing to do at the moment. And Yoshi pistons might be a little out of my price range... Sounds like fun though!

It does sound a little extreme. But the dohc models received a pretty good bump in power over the sohc, 38 to 45. Throw a cam in there, get one or two more hp? Then you have the 650 only making 52hp stock. What I'm curious about is the torque. You can achieve similar hp, but I would imagine...

    some modded xs400's

You've got my attention with that 450cc conversion, Drew. Any more info on that? Looks like new pistons/rings, cam and a bore job? Are the pistons from a different bike, or aftermarket? Planning on opening up the top end this winter to fix a leaky gasket, so I mind as well consider a big bore...

    1980 xs 400 charging

You could get a voltmeter. Do you have a battery charger? Maybe try charging the battery fully and seeing how she runs.

    1980 xs 400 charging

These bikes need a battery to run. And the their charging system is pretty terrible so if you don't start with a fully charged battery, it'll just keep going downhill. I believe it was drewpy who told me it takes these bikes something like 15 minutes of riding to gain back the lost charge of...

    How do!!

I haven't been spending as much time on yamahaclub as I used to... Bought a couple hondas for my next projects, and well, you know how it goes. There's still a special place in my heart for these yammys though!

Thanks! It took me about 9 months to do. I don't have any vids of it from the summer, and it's currently purged and inside my shop being stored for the winter. The mufflers are basically just glass packs though, so the pipes just sound like slightly muffled drag pipes.
